fanciers of the age agets is ts in the possession of a Salt Lake woman wo woman woman man and is valued not alone for its in intrinsic value but as an ai a t heirlooms heirloom The books hooks are now the property of Mrs T G Horn widow of the late Dr T G Horn of Colorado Springs and they are at the home of her daughter Mrs C E Richards of this city The books are seven in number and comprise a complete list of the works of the great writer The edition edition was pub published in Dublin Dut lin in 1739 but the dedica dedication dedication dedication tion and preface were written and are axe ared ded d ed six years earlier In the seven volumes are all the works of the great poet with critical and analytical notes and explanations The special edition was put out for forthe forthe forthe the young son of the Earl of known l as Baron Boyle the surname of the youth supposedly in college colle colIe e a being Richard Ri hard Boyle This Richard Boyle afterwards became Earl of Cork and was vas an intimate friend of Pope The dedicatory page with its quaint tion in Latin is shown as well as the beginning of a lavish and wordy dedi dedication dedication dedication cation written by the th publisher Levi Lev Theobald This Theobald Is supposed to have had another publishing house housein in London but the fact that this is the first edition ever eyer put out is in I Ireland is well authenticated The information is volunteered in the printed statements at the foot of the title page that the books were printed for John Smith at atthe atthe atthe the Philosophers Heads on the Blind Key and Abraham Bradley at the Two Bibles opposite the Sycamore alley alIey in Dames street Booksellers The edition is bound in calf The Cam CambrIdge Cambridge brIdge stamp of which institution it is supposed the young man Boyle was a student Is on both hoth the outside cover and the Inside leaf The design is well known mown to student students being a picture of a surmounted by an open book with a lion ut t one side and a harp at atthe the HIP other It is embossed on the out outride ride eide cover The books show wear externally although al although although though for many man years they have been I kept in a gla glass s ease case But the inside is In a fine state of preservation as tho the paper Is made of fine Irish linen Each leaf Ipar is firm yet fine and the print is good goodIn children His mothers maiden name was Boyle and they were heirlooms in her family They have been praised highly by connoisseurs and book bool lovers the late Major J B B Pond having at one time offered
