Thonas as postmaster of this city efty giving my reasons you again invited me to keep you posted as to the trend of events here herc In the course of your our letter you say sa I 1 am glad to have to address you jou on public matters Again Talks of Veterans When hen It was announced a that you ou were opposed to the appointment of Captain Hobbs to succeed himself as register of ot the United States land office in this state and that you had decided to recommend a change I following the lead of hundreds of o representative citizens of this state registered red a protest against the old vet veteran veteran veteran eran being discriminated against In do ing this I only asked that you show a de decent decent decent cent regard for the platform upon which 1 you jou became senator and to observe and follow the law which you jou ou as senator of the states had sworn to do For Foras Foras as fiS you are aware Sec U S Rev Stat provides that Persons honorably discharged from the military or naval service by reason of disability resulting from wounds or sickness Incurred in line of duty dut shall be preferred prefer ed for appointment to civil office provided they the are found to t nor in any atly wise bound thereby While many of your friends because of or their zeal zealand zealand and self interest in this matter may maybe maybe maybe be partially excused e for the liberal construction they place upon the foregoing provisions of the federal statutes you cannot be judged by bythe bythe bythe the same charitable rule ruie You being a lawyer were expected to give its provisions which you had taken an oath to obey a reasonable construction cons construction uc tion Your conduct in trying to defeat the reappointment of Captain Hobbs placed you qU J in n t h ratU t de ot doing all an in your power To evade if not override e the law And you jou were also placed in the light of not only trying to Induce the president to ignore If not violate the same law which he too had taken an oath to obey and enforce but to disregard t the fol foi lowing executive order which at the time was in full force and effect The Tho attention of the department Is hereby called to the provisions of the laws giving preference to ho veterans in appointment and retention The president desires that whenever the needs of the service will justify it and the laws will permit preference shall be given alike Ip in appointment and retention to honorably discharged veterans of the civil war Avar who are fit and qualified to perform the du ties of the places which they seek
