Show PASSING OF JAMES J MES HOGLE A WESTERN CHARACTER FRIEND OF MARCUS DALY I Dean Benjamin Brewster of St Marks Episcopal church will wUl conduct the services servIces ices at the funeral of me late James Hogle which will take place Monday Monda aft afternoon afternoon afternoon from the Hogle residence 6 East Brigham street Tie announcement ement of ofIr Mr Ir death yesterday was the cause of widespread sorrow among his numerous friends in Salt Lake and andIn andin andIn In the surrounding country Mr Hogle was as widely known k own In the in Intermountain intermountain region and up to his re ye retirement four years ago his place at t Main street was a gathering point for all allo of o the men of note passing through the city There were hundreds of successful mining men promoters financiers and commercial commer lal travelers who would not have thought a visit to Salt Luke Lake L ke complete without a hat at with James Hogle Rogue Attacked Att by Gold Fever Mr Hogle was borri borr at Armagh Ire Ireland Ireland Ireland land Oct 15 1838 When hen he lie was nearly 6 C I years old his parents moved to Canada making their home near Quebec Mr Hogle attended a French school at Que Quebec Quebec bec bee until he was 14 or 15 years old and then went to Illinois with his parents There he lived hived until the spring of 1859 when he lie was seized with the gold fever and joined the rush to Pikes Peak He was then 20 years old bid He was a mem member member member ber of a large party that started from Illinois Most of his companions grew tired of pf the travel before the ox teams reached St Joseph but young Hogle resolutely kepton driving a yoke of oxen and a mule to the wagon in hi which he carried his worldly goods With him were men Pf f the original party whom he helped along the way These three were all that remained of the Illi Illinois Illinois nois band when Denver was reached At that time Denver was waI merely a clus cluster cluster cluster ter of ot roughly ro built houses ho ses No one liv livIng living Ing there at the time lime had any Idea that the little settlement was the beginning of ofa ofa ofa a great griat gr at city j Four Years in Denver D nver Because he was able to speak French having haing learned the language at the school at Quebec Mr Hogle was into the t e eouse house ouse of or a French family ramil living in Den Denver Denver Denver ver and was soon looked upon as a mem member member member ber of the family During the four years ears he was in Denver he lie acted as bookkeeper for a mercantile establishment In 1863 the gold fever again seized him when he heard of the discoveries In Mon Montana Montana tana and he started for Virginia City Cit Mont where he did some mining in Alder Aider gulch He came to Salt Lake for the first time In 1864 wintering here that year and In Inthe Inthe Inthe the spring of ot 1865 g to Helena Mont and then to the gold placer grounds ot o Loon Creek Idaho In 1871 he came caine to Salt Lake determined to make nake the city his permanent home The next year he formed a partnership with James T Clasby He was married to Miss Ida Elizabeth King of Salt Lake in 1873 After a few years had passed Mr Hogle disposed of his interest in the th business with Clasby and with his brother Owen Hogle Hogie opened the place at Main street There he lie built up a profitable liquor business Late In me ne SOS Marcus Daly Dal the Mon Montana Montana tana t na millionaire urged Mr Hogle to move to Butte offering to back him In busi business business business ness enterprises there Mr Ir Hogle Hogie refused to leave Salt Lake I J Close Friend of Daly Daly and Hogle were warm friends I They before fortune had smiled upon either of them When Daly 1 lived In Salt Lake he was employed by I Walker Valker Brothers and was sent by them to Montana where he made his million millions Whenever Daly came to Salt Lake he I remembered his friend of less prosperous I days and would not go away until he had I exchanged reminiscences with Hogle He also had Hogle visit him at his home in I Montana But while fortune was pouring puring millions into Dalys Dahs lap Hogle was ws w s not being neg Through his mining interests and his business here he was w s able to amass amassa a substantial estate Owen Hogle Hogie retired from partnership In Inthe Inthe inthe the Main street liquor business In 1900 and James Hogle Hogie conducted the place alone ilone until four years ago when he sold t to the John Mahan company compan After his retirement from business he gradually placed laced his other interests into younger hands and during the two years preceding his death spent his time in travel and recreation Mr Hogle leaves a a widow and one son A Hogle |
