Sherman nor the war department has any advices of fateps being taken by the Mormons fur an uprising, if the rcporLs to that efiect are true there is no doubt that the United Statas oflicera stationed in Utah would have reported upon them ere this. The department of justice is not aware of auy hindrance to tbe execution ef the Jaws in that territory and the continued prosecution of the alleged participants in tbe Mountain Meadows massacre, nor has it entered into any investigation of the personal quarrel in which District Attorney Howard is involved. There is no deficiency in the appropriation for the contingent expenses of the United States civil officers in Utah, while the act of March 3d, 1877, provides lor tbe available appropriation of $U,UOO for summoniugjurors, and witnesses, transporting prisoners, etc., from the 1st of July next, to be paid under the direction and order of tbe department of justice upon accounts duly verified and certified. Tbe plea, therefore, that the last congress has obstructed justice there by a failure to make appropriations is groundless, quite as groundless probably as other portions of the story of the uprisiug of the Mormons and the failure here to give tbe United Statts district attorney proper support. |
