Show A Black Hills Character. "Calamity "Ca-lamity Jane" is a Black Hills character, charac-ter, who reminds one strongly of Bret Harte's heroiues. As Bhe sits astride her horse there is nothing in her attire to distinguish her sex save her small, neat-fitting gaiters and sweeping sweep-ing raven locks. She wears buckekin clothes, gayly beaded and fringed, and a broad-brimmed Spanish hat. She cornea from a Virginia city, Nevada, family of respectability and intelligence. Donning male attire in tbe mining regions, where no re straints were imposed for Buch freaks, she "took the road," and has ever since been nomadic in her habits- now with one of a hunting party, then in a mining Btampede, again moving with a freighting train, and, it ie said, she has rendered service as a scout. She has bad experience as a stage driver, and can draw the reins over bix horses, and handleB a revolver with the dexterity and fires it as accurately as a ranger. She is still in early womanhood, and her rough and dissipated career has not altogether "swept away the lines ivhere beauty lingers." |
