A Few SasKestions in Favor of kdacatiozL Beaver City, Utah, January 30th, 187S. Ediiort Herald: In your issue of the 27ih int., id a very interesting article on the school question, which prompts me to this writing. I agree with the writer of the same in much, if not all, be has adduced. That we need more appropriate legie lation in regard to education none will deny, but what and bow id the great question. . I argue and think can prove that the lault lies with parents. You ask tbe father or mother of a promising youth what Lhey desire bim to attain to and they will readily iniwur to all that is noble aud good, having in! their miud'a eye a high aim. Y, they wish their boy to become a brilliaul tr on (he stage of life, but thvy Bf-ldutn n-Aiize what ia most ueeemry, tiic time it requires in bjs traiuiug. They (or net that it takes years of unceauiag toil on the part of a student to accomplish this end. They forget that hooka are needed nut a great nuiiiber, but the proper kind. They forget that their little boys and girla, peradventure, may do like they did whan they were children, instead of goiDg to school, play by the roadside or linger with playmates on the way until it ia nearly noon, or, perhaps, not attend school that day. Tnev torcet. in most cased, to visit the bumble place wnere their darling ones, their hope in alter life, are sent to be trained lor future usefulness and thus encourage them and thoir teacher by their presence. They forget for-get these important things, and more that could be mentioned, but tbey seldom forget the favori!e spotted cow, the speckled hen ordomeeticated animals and fowls in general. They must be housed, fed ana cared for, if anything if, which i : proper enough when thoir children and themselves are not neglected by it. ! Parents, see that the tea her of your ohildreu is a man or woman worthy the name and place that he or she fills. Go once a month, if not oftener, and see how your children are being trained. Bee that they attend school when tbey should, and keep them six months at least in school each year. Soe that they have proper books and time for study and they will reward jou for it in after years There could be a great deal more said on this and other points in relation rela-tion to the eJuc.Uiou of our yonth, but time will not permit. There surely should bj something doue, mora than there is, iu the matter mat-ter of matting our schoolrooms aud play grounds more inviting. Why not carpet the schoolroom, place appropriate pictures, maps, charts and globes therein, and make the place of study, recitation and review home-like in its bearing and aspect? In this way our educatiou will be greatly improved. Shall we legislate? Yes; but GiBt start a firm foundation to build upon by showing our children that we are interested ia their educatien. Respectfully, etc., 8.. A. Wixom. |
