Show 8CHAJfB.-SMRT. The extract in yesterday's Herald from the Chicago Tribune, stating that Chief Justice SchaeUer had preferred pre-ferred charges against Governor Emery cnmwniing the latter's intimacy in-timacy with Murmoii fatnili- , crania7 a buzz of ezcitemeui iu tun city, uu occasioned not a little comment of one kind and another. We are pleased to state that tbere is no truth whatever in tbe Tribune's telegram. Judge Scbaefier never having made the frivolous charges as alleged; but, on the contrary, there is reason for believing his honor and the governor art on tbe most friendly terms. It may be doing an injustice, at times, to accept as true tha meanness charged to officials, but so much of it has proveu correct in its fullest Benue, that the public ought to be excused il occasionally tbey permit themselves 10 Dei love some agdeniuo that is incorrect. in-correct. Tbe Herald has ever bad the highest reapeat for Judge Scbael-fer Scbael-fer ag an honorable man, and has held implicit confidence in hiB official integrity; hence it was as surprising and painful to us as to anyone to Bee it publicly announced that he was engaged en-gaged in the disreputable and underhanded under-handed business of frying to bring about tbe removal of an official by such questionable means. Being convinced that tbe allegations allega-tions against his honor are entirely without foundation, it is a positive pleasure 'o so Btate, and we would that, whenever a charge is made against an official of a similar disgraceful dis-graceful character, we could also be ablo to truthful!? contradict it. |
