Members of the common council coun-cil acted as a committee of reception, and were in waiting at the depot. Mayor G. W. Gray met Gpn. Grant at the platform, and delivered a brief address of weKome. to which a verv short response was made. The entire en-tire party then entered carriages and preceded by the Aurora and Albany Brass Bands, started for Chemekta Hotel, the line of m ireb being down Court Street. Ail tbe school children in tbe city had assembled opposite the court, and as the procession tiled pl General Grant was naluted by the crowd with repeated and hearty cheers. The procession marched on to the hotel, reaching which the parly a) ghted from the carriages and were conducted into tbe parlor. An address ad-dress of welcome was delivered by 8. C. Adams, to which General Grant responded in brief, fitting terms. The doors of tbe parlor of tbe hotel were thrown open, and a general public reception re-ception followed. The reception lasted about an hour, and during thai time over 1,000 persons passed through the room and were presented to General Grant and other members of the party. .At 2 o'clock the reception ended and the gueBts were escorted to the dining room where acollation was spread. About 150 persons eat down to lunch. Among tbe party were Gov. Thayer, R. P. Earhart, secretary of state, and other state ofticiaJs. The lunch being over tbo party took carriages aud preceded by bands, marched to the depot and took a special train for Portland at 4 o'clock. Sslem was quite handsomely decorated de-corated in honor of the event. Great enthusiasm was manifested. Tbe general stated that it was tbe first time he had ever visited the city, aDd expressed himself as being gratified with its handsome, thrifty appear ance and the hearty welcome corded him. Gervais, Ogn., 16. Citizens of this little town assembled at the depot, and as the special train bearing Gen. Grant and party cume in they gave aim a hearty welcome. Fiags were disp'ayed from many building. The iraiu slopped only a few minutes. Aurora, 16 General Grant and parly were met at the depot to-day on the arrival cf the train here, by .several hundred people, and were j received with great enthusiasm. As the train arrived at tho depot, and departed, there was lu&ty cheering, mingled with pathetic strains of music. Oregon City, 16. Nearly 1,000 persons gathered at the depot this evening, to witness tbe arrival of the special train containinc Ganeral Grant and party. Tbe train dashed up totbedepot amid deafening cheers, and strains of music. Major Randall appeared on tbe platlorm, and in a few appropriate words, welcomed tbe general, who responded by thanking him. 6everal old ex-soldiers pressed through the crowd and eagerly gra?ped Grant's baud. Oue old man called out "I was with you, general, at Fort Donaldson." Another said: "I was with you at Lookout." Grant leaned forward and warmly pressed tbe band of each old veteran in silence, but he aeemed visibly moved by these simple, earnest demonstra tions. Tbe train stopped a few minute and aeveral hundred improved im-proved the opportunity to press Jorward aud shake hands with the distinguished visitor. Portland, 16. Gen. Grant and party arrived hereon a special train from Salem, this evening. He at tended a grand sacred concert at Turn Hail, given by the Handel and Uaydn Society. To-morrow morniDe, at 5 o'clock the entire party will sail hence on tbe Bteamer St. Paul, for San Franoisco. |
