Show JURIES IN UTAH. j In the Washington .Star of tho 2-1 th inst., wc find the following : 1 Tho Holi-o Judiciary (.'omruiltt'o, nt il.,.ir meeting this morning, fuuher j d Jiufc.. Pulnnd's bill to regul.Uo Vuiction of juries in Utah, sons.to provide for the nppint rnent of a commission commis-sion by tho Governor U make up a lift of nil main citizens of linvful ago who Imyu been citizens lor one year, who arc eligible elig-ible to jury duty, and from Hub list the names of grand and petit jurors shall be drawn in opuncouri. From our frequent recurrence to tho bills bcloro Congress for "the regulation of affairs in Utah," as tho "ring" here is pleased to term their operations in Washington, our readers may conclude that we arc sensitive on the subject of special legislation. Wo make no denial of that fact; all rain are sensitive of thoir rights, and however confident wciuay feel in the ultimate triumph of right, wc are none the less impressed with the forco of tho maxim of tho sages of tho past, ' 'eternal vigilance is the prico of liberty." Against tho malicious work of tho miserable cliquo of adventurers' whoso ellbrta arc directed to securing "proacriptivo Legislation" for Utah, our efforts have of late boon directed, and wo rcalizo with no littlo satisfaction satisfac-tion that our labors have not been in vain. Tho above paragraph shows that all tho abject cringing and besieging of tho missionaries of "tho Utah ring" wore insufficient to secure any respectable re-spectable member of Congross to endorse en-dorse tho "Star Chamber" proceed-ingi proceed-ingi by which it was hoped to placo the liberties and rights of the people of Utah at the mercy of "a mission jurist," his clerk and a marshal. mar-shal. All that wc have asked, and all that we do ask, is the full enjoyment of our political rights, and these we shall battle for, let the issue be what it may, and wc have the fullest and most abiding confidence con-fidence in the spirit of right animating animat-ing the American people, and believe that in the end we shall triumph. If in the opinion of Congressmen the people of this Territory should be treated by the national government in a manner different to the citizens of other Territories, let it be so understood! under-stood! Let it be so proclaimed to the world, and let tho world pass judgment judg-ment on the outrage! But when wc think of the miserable clique which seeks to array the national government govern-ment against tho peoplo of this Territory, Ter-ritory, we ask ourselves to what lias tho administration of our government govern-ment fallen! The Congress of the United States never would entrust a hen-roost to the keeping ol the men who are laboring at Washington for the overtluow ef political freedom in Utah. We are pleased to note one step in a direction contrary to the wishes ol the "ring" and when the Judiciary Committee have given more serious reflection to the whole subject, they will speedily get through with Carey and his gang, as they have with Maxwell, Max-well, and wc cannot but believe thfct the just and equitable rights of our citizens will be as fully protected an are those of any Territory in the Union. |
