Show INFANTILE OECIMVTIOX. That the children are made to bear the sins of their fathers and of their mothers is being made mournfully manifest by the mortuary statistics of New York. During a recent week the number of deaths in that city according to the returns of Dr. Elisha Harris, register of vital statistics was S39, of which a large number over two-tli irds were child ren under twovearsof age! This frightful infantile in-fantile decimation is a disgrace to the Empire City; and though the slaughtered babes were doubtless the offspring of people in whom it was a crime to assume parentage, and in all probability would have grown up a burden to themselves and a misfortune mis-fortune to the State to a large extent at least the destruction of such a number uf human lives by ignorance, neglect or destitution, is not the less horrible or less disgraceful. Advice in the premises is impotent we can only deplore that the law which decrees de-crees the survival of the fittest should demand such hecatombs of innocence . Brooklyn Argus. |
