Show LETTER FROM SALT LAKE. What a Visitor Sjs of tlie Country. Towneend House, ) Salt Lake City, Aug. 9, 1574, j Eds!., Courier: I am domiciled at this house, where it has been my pleasure to.. have. stopped five times previous to this, and from one to three weeks at a time. I was early acquainted in.Waj'ne County, N. Y., in 18o0, with .niiiny of the leading Mormon p,' who went to Nauvoo, 111. President Touug then lived at Port Byron, Cajuga County, N. Y., hence I have frequently went to President Young's office with strangers to introduce in-troduce them, and at all times have met with the most cordial reception. J think that many of his Gentile visitors visi-tors go away from his office very much disappointed at not being given tho Drivelege of seeing his wives and children, to exhibit them asamonkey show or a caravan in the States. He is only a man, and a thorough business busi-ness man. Take our business men in all the commercial cities in Chicago, Chi-cago, my homo, they have regular hours bankers from 10 till 3; managers man-agers of railroad interests the same. What could they do to be plaGed in a front orhce, open and accessible to the many, to be catechized on their religion re-ligion or the general policy of the management of their owri or corpor-1 ate affairs'.' To my mind the answer would be "not any." Each time I have come here I am overwhelmed with astonishment to see what this people have done in twenty-seven years. I am opposed to tho system of plural wives, but am in favor of colonizing, and I can see the best evidence ol this here, of any I 1 ha,ve eyer seen or read of in this country. - I have never had the time or means to travel in Europe, and really no desire. My observation is that . we cannot colonize the Yankco nation, particularly the young American. Ameri-can. As a rule the commercial centers- arc- the place where the b-boys want to be nice opera houses, theatres, the-atres, banks chip, parks, boulevards, trotting course, base ball clubs, boat racing, cool, fresh promenades for moonlight wanderings while tho frontiersmen are driving herds, pursuing pur-suing mining, agriculture, mechanism, mechan-ism, ifcc. Wo are at home, enjoy our own religious faith, political opinions, and pursue any business calling, or indulge in anything we crave, so as to come within the statue of our States and the U. S. Some overreach. over-reach. In taking up the daily Tribune ol , this morning. I "noticed an article . headed "A Diplomat on his Travels, by Baron de Huban," and his re-; re-; marks in the article regarding the Townsend House, the landlord and Mrs. Townsend I think are unjust ir n every sense, and savor very stronelj of untruth. I was here in lSGy whoii : Mr. Townsend had but .one wifo, the present one, whost equal I have never met in a hotel tnr the crreat zeal disDlaved in trvim to mako the guests comfortable; finding find-ing her in the parlor, dining room, chambers, kitchen, and in fact ever)' where, to sec that nothing was omitted that wauld tend to insure the comfort of their guests; administering administer-ing day and night to any who came here sick. Ask my wife, who became very much interested in her while here, and now, In 1ST 1, I have seen her watching over a lady who came here a few days since, sick unto death this morning she is convalescent. convales-cent. Show rao many landladies in our cities who do this, and I will show you more who have tc be kept in a separate palace. Now for Mr. Townsend. Ht it, a plain, old - fashioned gentleman, social, obliging and generous not in the least nobby; has made money by t hard work, perseverance and economy, econo-my, lie was not made for a parloi , ornament, but he looks after tbe sup' plies, his transfer business and farm, ( and has very obliging clerks and attendants at-tendants in the house and outside. I: any one wants solid home com fort stop at the Townsend House. Yoi can wear a "biled" shirt or a red one. We all dress clean out i2tc and it is so easy to keep clean b; troing to the Hut Sulphur Baihinf House, and have a plunge bath Q private tub, I came here for my health, nnd an happy to say that I am greatly bene fitted. At "home 1 am in the earn' ing business, and not writing fu newspapers. Yours respectfully, N". , -Oilumwa (Iow.i) C'-'fri'T, |
