Show Unique Surgical Operation. Yesterday Dr. J. M. Benedict performed per-formed a surgical operation at. once dclicnlo, dangerous and unique, and tho only one of the kind yet performed perform-ed west of New York. Drs. Volluin, Hamilton, Crane, S. B. Young ami A.W. Calderwcre present and watchal the proceedings. The subject was a lady who has been suffering with "cauliflower exevesenco of tho cervix uteri," or cancer of the womb, and the instrument usal was Byrne's wire noose for amputating such excresen-ces. excresen-ces. The instrument has a fine wire loop at tho ono end, the other presenting present-ing tho wire points which aro connected con-nected with the wires of ji powerful electrical battery, and from it such heat is obUiinal that the wire, becoming be-coming thoroughly ehargal with the olectricity, at once euLs and cauterizes cauteri-zes tho diseasal part. Dr. Benedict experimental on a beef tongue the evening previous, and cut and cauterized cauter-ized it with a precision and clearness that left no doubt of the effect upon a diseased portion of the human frame. Yesterday, when the lady was thrown into a state of insensibility by the use of aua'sthetics, the wire noose was introdueal, was fixed around the excrescence, and the application appli-cation of he electricity was made, resulting in removing a mass of matter in twenty-four minutes. The doctor was satistial thai more should bo removal, and the operation opera-tion was repeatal, the second occupying occu-pying a few minutes less time than the first. The electrical arrangements, in an adjoining room, which were leading to the patient's hwlside, were under I the direct charge of the Deseret telegraph tele-graph company, and were very perfect per-fect and well managal. Tins was an important part of the arrangement. One hundred and fifty-two' cups of Eleetropoion or cartwm battery were divided into nineteen sections, in order or-der to produce the greatest amount of quantity of electricity, in contradistinction contra-distinction from intensity both technical tech-nical terms each section containing eight cups. The power thus ob-(aiual ob-(aiual was so great that when placed upon short circuit last night, it illuminatal the battery room as brilliantly as if it were broad noonday. noon-day. And yet despite this- the platinum plati-num wire w;is so small and the dampness, damp-ness, during the operation, so great, that no extra amount of heat was in-ducal. in-ducal. Superintendent A. M. Mus-ser, Mus-ser, of the line, watehel the proceedings proceed-ings with the utmost interest; Mr. Harry Cox, the electrician of the company, who has given much attention atten-tion to the subject, managal the batten', bat-ten', while Mr. Mark Croxall had charge of the circuit. Dr. Bcnalict found these gentlemen work to the instant, and the delicate and dangerous danger-ous operation was a- brilliant success. We did not know which to admire most, the nerve and coolness of the surgeon, or the pluck of the lady, who prepared for an operation of the most serious character with entire calmness and implicit confidence in the gentleman who was In perform it. At a late hour last evening she was in a very comfortable condition. The tumor removal weighed altout two ounces. |
