Jones, late elerk in the Southern bank of Georgia, at Savannah, had committed com-mitted fraud on that bank by means of forged drafts to the amount of $30,500. An adjourned meeting of the caucus Republican senators was held this after -1 noon, at which the vacancies in the chairmanship of the committees, caused by the expiration of the terms of various vari-ous senators, was agreed to be tilled as follows: Merrill, of Maine will be made chairman of the committee on appropriations ap-propriations in place of Cole; Bucking-bam, Bucking-bam, of the committee on Indian affairs, in place of Harlan; Bore man, of the oommittse on Territories, in place of Nye; Sprague, of the public lands committee; com-mittee; Lewis of tbo committee on the District of Columbia; Flannigan of the committee on education and labor; Brownlow of the committee on revolutionary revolu-tionary claims. Howe leaves the chairmanship chair-manship of the claims committee to become be-come chairman of the committee on library; and Scott succeeds Howe as chairman of the claims committee. The commiitees on investigations, retrenchment, re-trenchment, political disabilities, and alleged outrages in tho southern States, are ail discontinued. The sherifl and solicitor of York county have been here, and virtually decided Smutty Nose island to be in Maine, by assuming assum-ing charge of the proceedings in tne Shoals murder case. South Bend, Ind., 8. The largest crowd of peoplo ever assembled in this city were gathered hero to-day, to welcome wel-come ex-vice-president Colfax home. On arriving at tho dopot, he was mot by an immense- procession wilh banners, music, etc , and escorted to tbe court house, where mayor iliilor delivered a brief address of welcome, expressing, on behalf of the citizens, irrespective of party, their pleasure at his return, and declaring their unshaken conlidonco in his honor, truth, purity and integrity their undiminished aileciion for him as & citizen and neighbor, and thoir utter disbelief of tho f landers wilh which ho has beeen assailed. Colfax then took the stand, and, when thy cheering subsided, proceeded to mako a speech occupying nearly two hours; in which, after thanking his neighbors and friends for iheir cordial reception, ho proceeded to spenk of the recent charges against him in connection connec-tion with the credit mobilicr transactions; transac-tions; and roferred with considerable bitterness to the treatment he had received re-ceived from a certain portion of tho press of tbo country. At tho conclusion of his speech, Colfax was preionled with a letter signed by 1,500 of his fellow citizens, , expressing their conhdenco in him; after which the following resolution was offered and unanimously adopled: "Resolved, That in walconiing Schuyler Schuy-ler Colfax home to-day, after his twenty twen-ty years of arduous public icrvice, in which ho has been excelled by none as a model statesman, temperate, judicious and faithful to principles, wo do so with undiminished confidence in his honor and integrity, both as a public man and a private amen."
