Show Tlic Southern Mail. From all parts of the south the cry comes up that the mails arc not carried car-ried with any regard to the public, or in any schedule time. They may start, it is alleged, from Salt Lake City at a specified hour; but when they arrive at their destination at points south, or whether they ever arrive ar-rive there, are conundrums which seem tp he insoluble. A few days ago Hun. L. E. Harrington postmaster at American Fork, publicly charged through the I'rovo Time- that three letters came to Ida office, addressed to Wm. Grant, a gentleman doing business busi-ness in American Fork, which had been opened and money extracted from them. In his letter Mr. II. says: "How many more have been opened, content-- taken, and letters destroyed cannot at present be told; but some one is doing a big business robbing the mail." This is plain language, a direct di-rect charge; yet what is beingdonc to ferret out these thefts? Government . s being defrauded and the public robbed; and the thieves seem to have an undisturbed field for their opera- lions. Then, too, the mails come and go between points south, and between this city and Southern settlements, in .such peculiar fashion that no man can tell when or whether he will ever receive his letters or papers. Tho yvevhas been grumbling audibly; the Beaver Enterprise has been growling growl-ing ; and on Friday it was telegraphed from St. Georgo that " as usual" there had been no through mail from Salt Lake. General Sloauaker was down south a distance some time ago, with "'plenary powers," as we understand, to fix all mail matters ; but though he enlightened the people of Utah count on the virtues of tho official paragons and "carpetbag" thieves that have ruined Louisiana, he evidently failed to remove the causes of complaint which the people feel they have had to endure for too long a time. Docs Colonel Wickizcr know of .these grievances ?' It seems he cannot be ignorant of them. Thry are n it fault-findings without reason. There is no person having business communications with joints south of ' this city, who has not had cause to complain. And it is timethat a very important change should hike place. If there is not an immediate improvement improve-ment in the " safely, certainty and celerity," with which those mails arc earrii-d, we shall feel oNiged if parties having just cause of complaint will forward to us facts; which they can suh-tantiate, and wc shall endeavor to take such steps as will lead to the removal re-moval of the grievances complained of. |
