Show New York is exercising her ingenuity ingenu-ity in endeavoring to introduce a motive mo-tive power upon her canals in place of horses. Tho legislature some time since passed a law offering a premium of $100,000 for tho successful application applica-tion of some other motive power, and maDy suggestions have been offered. Some propose cables on the bottom of tho canals, some a locomotive on tbe tow path, others an elevated track, or a track upon the bottom of the canal, while one individual has suggested propellor paddle wheels on tho bows of the boats, with imitation fish wings on tho sides and ducks' feet at the bottom. Already two hundred boats havo been built to compcto for the prize, and the matter is in a fair way for solution. |
