Show TELEGRAPHIC RUMORS. There are oho or two ruiuors'in telo-graphio telo-graphio circles, that appear to have lair foundation, and tho announcement of each of which as a fait accompli would provo of great interest to tho public. Oho of those, tho further reduction re-duction of telegraph tariffs, is thus touched upon in a late number of tho Journal of Telegraph : Tho Western Union Telegraph company com-pany have under consideration, and tho plan nearly matured, for a further reduation of tariffs, whi'jh is to bo of the most radical and swooping nature-Tho nature-Tho change contemplates tho use of only ton different rates for tho entire country, and will establish a uniform air-lino distanco rate between all offices in each of tho divisione. With their Hplendid system of linos and improved apparatus for tho transmission of nicssiigos, thiH company is fully prepared pre-pared to handlo and expeditiously per iurm tlio increased business whioh it is boliovud will arise from these oonccs-flionp. oonccs-flionp. It is only in view of such in-uronso in-uronso that tho oontcinplated reduction io rates can bo justified. Whatever has induced this prot-pcot, prot-pcot, whether it bo tho postal-telegraph discussion, as suggested by some, or tho conviction of tho man-agora man-agora of tho Western Union oompaoy that their lines aro fully proparcd to einy the extra amount of business which it is so widely believed cheaper rates will induco, it ccrtaiuly s gratifying gratify-ing to learn that there is opportunity for a trial of tho reduction experiment without tho "paternal" intervention of government. Tho paper from which wo quote above iu tho official organ of tho Western Union Telegraph company com-pany aud therefore its uttoranoe oau bo taken as authoritative. Tho second rumor .to which wo refer is that tho Yanderbilt ring in tho Now York stock uiarket havo bought up a controlling interest in Western Union Btock said to havo been sold out at 70 by tho present managers who havo oarricd it from 35 cents and having run it up to Jj5, that the managers of tho telograph . uonipauy refuso to buy back; will retire re-tire at tho expiration of their presoot official tonus; and havo already arranged to tako ohargo of a consolidation of tho various opposition lino?. This can only bo considered an extremely improbable rumor, in whioh there may possibly be a grain of truth. Suph a movement must effect tho building of a very powerful pow-erful opposition to the Western Union company; and if there be any likelihood likeli-hood of its consummation, it may be taken as ono of tho ineontivos to the proposed rcduotion of rates. Whatever may be the oause for these movomcnts, tho realization of either cannot fail to benefit tho great public, and therefore will be gladly noted. |
