But in this , timo of dire need and suffering for our friends in Chicago, our motto should be brevity of speech and promptitude and liberality of action. Our suffering brethren need deeds rather than words at our hands. It is fully to say that wo sympathize with the misfortunes of that city, tho greatness of whose progress has been the wonder and admiration of the civilized world; wc must show our sympathy by substantial a&-istance. Id conclusion the speaker thought the universal sentiment might welt bo expressed in Dean Swift's famous charity sermon : "He that giveth to the )oor lendeth to the Lord. If you like the security, down with the cash." Mr. Fitch was called for and olo-qnently olo-qnently depicted the sufferings of the homeless people of Chicago, which but a few days ago btood in every 'clement of civilization one of the foremost cities of the civilized world. It is nosf destroyed and hundreds of thousands of women and children are literally starving. Nothing but subscriptions substantial aid can improve thoir situation. The city : of Salt Lake should telegraph at least $20,000 by to-morrow morning. ' Applause. "( ' lion- Frank Falter remarked that he had been authorized to say that a lady of great literary distinction, Mrs. Lippcncott ''tirace Greenwood" would gladly contribute the proceeds of a lecture to the fund, which announcement an-nouncement was received with great applause. Mayor Wells said' that a desire had been , expressed to hear a few remarks from Mrs. Lippcncott, and invited this distinguished lady to the stand. She waa received with liberal applause, and said substantially, that the good book informs us that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth; speaketh, but she ' could not express the feelings of her heart in view of the terrible calamity which has ahTictcd Chicago where she had many generous friends. She would like to do something some-thing to relievo this sorely stioken people. Never, said she, did I envy the rich as as I do now, and pray that God may put in tho hearts of all to give abundantly. She rejoiced to 3cc people of all opinions coming together to carry out the common obligations of humanity. This would do much to heal all these unhappy differences. It seems to ho time for some woman to speak of the poor little children dying of esposuro in the streets of Chicago. But 1 cannot talk of them. You gentlemen gen-tlemen all know what is due to trie gravity of such an occasion.
