Show i A blow a r rns i'rixc." President Grant, in his message to Congress, enunciates the following I sentiment, which will find a responsive I echo in the hearts of all honorable peo-! peo-! pie in the Union : The pioneer whu incurs the dange: and privations of a frontier life, and : thus aids the foundation of a new commonwealth, com-monwealth, renders a signal service to his country, and is entitled to its spc cial favor and protection. It is well known that Utah is tv ; pioneer territory of the west; th;.: i without her as a base of supplies, Xc vada, Montana, Idaho. Colorado ainl Wyoming might to-day have formed part of the ''Great American Desert" instead of being flourishing common-wea'ths: common-wea'ths: and that had they notexisted as peopled Territories and had Utah not been pioneered, the trans-continental railroad might yet have been a dream -of the future. This gives to I 'tali claims excellence in pioneering, pioneer-ing, as it does to those who were her pioneers, no matter what the motive which impelled them to the arduous and terrible enterprise. It is gratifying gratify-ing to see the Chief Magistrate of a great nation, thus publicly recognize the justice of such claims, without individualizing indi-vidualizing any portion of a country that has been so rich in noble pioneering. pioneer-ing. Yet here in Utah, and by the "ring" which aims to "rule or ruin," to be a pioneer of this Territory is to be the special object of vituperation and calumny, cal-umny, the butt against which the most envenomed darts of malice, envy, detraction de-traction and falsehood are aimed. Will the "ring" fall into rank behind be-hind the present file-leader of the nation ? Will they, instead of seeking seek-ing Toy every means in their power to injure quiet and orderly citizens, entertain enter-tain at least a modicum of that respect, re-spect, thus enunciated, for the people who preceded them herd, and made a desert into a fruitful Territory, thus aiding in the foundation not alone of one new commonwealth but of several? It would be pleasant to think so; but from their course in the past we have little hope for it. They are of the poisonous kind, and would rather sting themselves than be without victims. vic-tims. Yet the expression of President Pres-ident Grant is none the les-j a blow to them, if they could only realize it. |
