The vptlai Couiuultlce appoluttd to examine aud report on Sew tug MicUiur at the orlb Caroltua Slate Fair, lirld at HalelgU lt week, awarded a Gold ?Iedal to the Florence Sewing .Machine for the ta.c and quUtuei of tt uiovement, perfect ton and large variety of w ork-. aud lu valuable new features, making ma-king It tlie most valuable Sewing Machine for family use. i Taitlea contemplating the pur-! chase of Sewing Machines arc re-(iite-teil to read the following from the Sew York "Tribune" of Oct. j 19tb, 1S70: SKWI.NG iMACHIAES. ' 'o have recently had occasion to uiiike I some iiwuiries into the progress of improvement improve-ment in the mechanism of sewing: machines, and were not a little surprised to loarn that the central idea in the first invention the shuttle still holds its place, thouph many ; attempts have been made to supercede it. ' The shuttle, in combination with the needie, is still the means Ufed to form the stiteu, in : the leading machines, and we find that the growth of trade is chietly with the shuttle- i uting machines. j ihe improvementa that are taking firm hold in practical use are, therefore, necessa-I necessa-I rily in connection with the shuttle, either : in the detail of the shuttle itself, or I in other parti of the machine connected with it, to cause toe whole to operate more perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify its use. .Many important gains in this direction, made since the first great invention, are undoubtedly un-doubtedly embodied in the "Florenco" ma-chide; ma-chide; and we recommend our readers to carefully inspect the "i'lorence" before making ma-king a choice. Ihe points peculiar to this machine are: An unusual amount of money is spent in masing the "Florenee," thereby securing the best material (eteel, for instance, where others use cat-iron ), and the Lnest finish of important parts (the shuttle, fur example, being rigidly rejected if it varies from the standard l-2.tWJth of an inch !) It is constructed con-structed on the simplest scientific principles, entirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, and links wnich so often get perversely out of order and sorely perplex every one but I the practiced machinist by their unaccount-l unaccount-l able freaks. Ihe "Florence" is so easily i managed, and its useis so readily learned, I that an ordinary girl of ten haa sense and muscle enough to run it perfectly. The lock-i lock-i stitch, as made by the "Florence" is very ! regular and perfect, very strong and elastic, j and is drawn into the fabric evenly, grad-I grad-I ually, exactly, without jerking, and without j causing the seam to pucker, or straining the thread so as to endanger its breaking ; con-. con-. jequently, vei y fine threads and ligbt fabrics I can be used. Besides this, the "Florence" (in al! but the cheapest styles) also makes three additional stitches a double lock, a i single knot and a double knot which are stronger and more elastic than any other stitch, and which are made by no other machine. ma-chine. The "Florence" is the only machine that has a reversible leed, whereby the direction, di-rection, of the sewing can be instantly changed without stopping the work, thus enabling the operator to quilt er embroider with unusual lac ill ty, to 6ew backwards and I easily strengthen a seam wherever desired, j and, finally, by a few repeated stitches, to j fasten ends in the quickest and strongest j way. It is the only machine that has a self-! self-! adjusting shuttle-thread tension, which works so perlejtly that the operator can run I across the i eaviest seams and sew the finest linen and the thickest broadcloth in immediate imme-diate succession withont breaking thethread I and without chancing the needle, stitch or j tension. The "Florence" draws the thread I into the cloth with unequaled precision and 'certainty, by means of an ingenious automatic auto-matic "take-up" wheel, which disposes of the slack thread left after the stitch with an accurate promptness that prevents all snarling snarl-ing or dropping of stitches, and allows the operator to sew backward, or to run off the cloth and on again, with perfect impunity. ; It has an improved elastio hemmer, exclu- siveiy its own, which is managed wkh ease, I and will make a hem of any width on any ; material. It not on;y makes a perfect gather ' and sews it to a band at one operation, but j it hems, and binds, and felis, and quilts, and cords, and tucks, and gathers, and braids without bast in?, auch special provision i made a-anst injurious wear that the "Florence" "Flor-ence" is claimed ani guaranteed by theCom-pany theCom-pany to last twice as iong without repair aj i any other shuttle machine in the market, without the slightest difficulty. very part j of the "Florence" is so perfectly and perma-! perma-! nently adjusted, and it has so few joints and points of friction, that it runs with the nt-j nt-j most ease. lha needle is set and ! threaded, and the stitch is lengthened, i j shortened, or reversed with the ut-! ut-! most ease. In usinr the "Florence" neither f the work nor the operator's dress is liable to ! be soiled. The "Florence" with all these I claims to superiority, sells at the same price j as other hrit-ciass machines. This fact may be meu-j meu-j tioned a evidence of its superior merit. Its excellence consists both in the matter embraced, em-braced, and the arrin-ieuient or classification classifica-tion of subjects. In the collection of matter contained in I the woik it is intended to give all the statute ! law and the general principles of the common com-mon law in connection therewith, which a justice of the peace, polica mauistrate, con-stableor con-stableor coroner will require in discharging their duties, or that a practicing lawyer will need for reference in ordinary cases, or that may be required for the information of every business man. This will entirely supersedo the necessity for reference to the volumes ol the statutes. 'i he arrangement of the work is methodical, methodi-cal, and i;f the essence of its value, presenting present-ing each subject in its order aud in its proper relation with others. The plan of the arrangement is entirely original with the author, being the result of study and practical experience. It has long been a subject of general remark that the author has, in this work, presented the law with a clearness and simplicity of style which renders ren-ders tho whole aline plain to the common understanding as to tho moro advanced lawyer. The justi'.-e of the peace, police magistrate, ; constable, and coroner will find in this book all the necessary forms and instructions instruc-tions in regard to every branch of his duty. The practicing lawyer will find in it, collected col-lected and arranged in convenient form, all the statute law and decisions, with reference to adjudicated ciscs applicablo in ordinary practice. The business man will find in it a complet e collection of forms required in tho transaction transac-tion of business. Students of the law will likewiso find this a very valuable work for perusal and reference, refer-ence, as containing the general principles of the common law, cleaily stated, in connection connec-tion with tho ordinary branches Of juris prudence. pru-dence. The .following brief reference to the ton-tents ton-tents ol this work will afford in some.degree an idea of its peculiar merits. Tho book is 1 divided in five parts, the subject of each be ing methodically arranged in chapters or appropriate ap-propriate subdivisions, as follows : Part 1.
