Show THE PICKPOCKETS JAMES MURRAY AND C S M LER PLEAD NOT GUILTY Some Testimony Taken and the Hearing Hear-ing Continued Until Wednesday Defendants Unable to Give Bonds James Murray and C S Miller the brace of pickpockets who were arrested ar-rested on Thursday were given a preliminary pre-liminary hearing before Justic Won ger and both of the crooks pleaded not guilty Toe only witness examined was Hon George W Thomson whose pocketbook was stolen bv one of the thugs at the corner of Second South and Main streets The case was set for 10 oclock but was continued until 2 on motion of the two prisoners The continuance was granted in order to give them time to secure the assistance of counsel When the court convened at 2 oclock the culprits still desired that the case should be continued but the justice issued an order that it should ba proceeded pro-ceeded with The men sent for four attorneys before they were able to secure se-cure one but finally Attorney Lippman appeared and the trial began The attnrnev fnr the defpnrtnnts asked for the statutory time in which to plead but this was denied Then wa the attorney tried another tack and asked for a change of venue on tin ground that the court was prejudiced but this was also overruled and the trial was proceeded with Mr Thomson testified to tile facts as stated in yesterdays issue of The Herald In addition he admitted that he was not positive as to the identification identifica-tion of Miller and Murray as the men who jostled him on the platform but i was of the opinion that they were the men Ths ended the testimony for yesterday yes-terday and the case was continued until I un-til next Wednesday at 2 oclock Mur rays bonds were fixed at 52000 and Millers at 51000 and both were taken to the county jail 1 |
