Show ELECTION FRAUDS Denver has been wrought up verv i much the last few months over the i question of frauds in the elections thee and a special grand jury was summoned sum-moned to look into the matter It has just made a report which Is in part as follows To the Hon F T Johnson Judge District Dis-trict Court Denver Col We the members of the special grand Ury summoned to lOOK inio me recent election frauds and other crimes after about six weeks of investigation beg to submit to your honor the following Indictments have been found against a number of judges of election and I other parties as conspirators to defraud the people of an honest count of the votes but we have signaly failed to reach the leaders and instigators of the frauds as every obstacle has been thrown in our way by the opposition of the combined influences of officers and politicians to prevent our obtaining obtain-Ing the Information necessary to warrant war-rant an indictment Scores of witnesses have been befcre the jury and upon examination have failed to disclose anything that would enable the jury to locate the principals The lack of memory mem-ory on the part of witnesses Is appall ng they being determined at all hazards haz-ards to shield the guilty parties There fd very little doubt however in the I minds of the Jurors as to who the prin cia conspirators are Our elections are fast becoming a farce when local politicians control and manipulate the nominations cf corrupt persons for office and prominent and influential citlaens contribute largely to their election expecting to be benefited thereby it Is time we looked for a remedy rem-edy The county and city officials have the appointing cf the election judges hare h-are dkCionest and corrupt persons chosen There are plenty of citizens of good character who would willingly serve in that caoacitv With honest and competent judges appointed we believe be-lieve the question would be solved So far as free government Is concerned II con-cerned there are no crimes so J serious as those against the ballot and yet they I I i I are too common everywhere If elections elec-tions are corrupt how is it possible to have pure government If bad men can set themselves elected to office through corruption they can perpetuate themselves in office by the same means Denvers experience appears to have been far worse than that usually had by cities where corrupt elections are not unknown but It is along the old familiar lines When dishonest and corrupt cor-rupt persons are chosen as election officers of-ficers it Is to do dishonest work and nothing else If people would keep their liberties inviolate they must preserve their elections elec-tions pure it is the only way to do it |
