Show THE TURKISH SITUATION The latest news from Constantinople is that England Is really in accord with the powers and that the Sultan need look for no sympathy from the Czar That the powers are In accord as to the occurrence of outrages in Armenia there is no doubt but that they have any definite plan of action regarding those outrages and are in accord on them is not so certain France is not likely to be altogether in accord with England on the situation In Turkey for France was unceremoniously elbowed el-bowed out of the Joint occupation of Egypt ten or more years ago by England Eng-land while England is till there And France still remains sore from the elbowing There recently appeared in the Revue de Paris an article on affairs in the Orient in which the writer who says the London Times correspondent there is reason to believe is M Hana toux formerly minister of foreign affairs af-fairs urges the Sultan to remain master mas-ter of his own dominion and show himself promptly disposed to fulfill his engagements If this is done the crisis will remain an internal one while if it should assume an international interna-tional aspect it will be peacefully adjusted ad-justed on the basis of the maintenance of the integrity of Turkey which will be asserted by the two pacific powers France and Russia If the Sultan Tvill make proper engagements en-gagements and they must guarantee the safety of Christians in Armenia and elsewhere in his dominions and promptly fulfill them there will be no international complications otherwise there may be Nor is it by any means certaIn that if the crisis assumes an international in-ternational aspect that It will be peacefully peace-fully adjusted on the basis of the maintenance main-tenance of the Integrity I of Turkey as the Revue writer says What will happen hap-pen in Turkey no one can say but the best guarantee of her integrity Is the jealousy of the very powers that now appear to be menacing her |
