an Armenian fired on them several times with revolvers re-volvers wounding Bahri Pasha in the calf of the leg and Raid Pasha in the foot Armenak and his accomplice were Immediately arrested Caused Commotion This Incident having been the first to occur in Trebizond and subjects of the Ottoman empire em-pire having commenced to commit com-mit crimes and to enter Into rebellion rebel-lion in different parts of the empire caused naturally a certain emotion to the population Two days later oh the following Friday at about 0 oclock at night several Mussulmans belonging belong-ing to the trades union having met in the Aivassal quarter with a certain Hatchik a son of a barber named Sle pane who was being sought by the police as being incriminated in the attack at-tack of the two pashas they addressed him in these terms Stop where are you escaping to You are sought by the authorities Hatchik instantly drawing out his revolver fired upon them a number of times Rhami Effendi who happened to bo passing in a neighboring street heard the shots and wishing to know their cause turned Unto the street from whidh came the noise tout being seen by Hatchik he was Instantly Shot and killed This second incident following so closely upon the first caused great excitement ex-citement and at the sound of the shots the population in the neighboring quarters quar-ters precipitated Itself into the streets some carrying arms and some unarmed un-armed A rumor having been circulated circulat-ed to the effect that the Armenians had gone to the governments houses and assassinated the vail the populace immediately marched in that direction from which arose a great confusion and blocking of the adjoining streets However the civil and military authorities author-ities and also the zaplies and agents of the police assisted by the prominent citizens of the city having stationed themselves the entrance of the streets finally succeeded In calmIng calm-Ing the mob and dispersing the crowd They explained that the Armenians bad done nothing The Critical Situation Tho repetition of the shots fay the Armenian conspirators and the non arrest of one of their number and oC his accomplice had the effect of keep IfiS up public agitation On the other hand the lack of confidence In the authorities au-thorities and in the Mussulman population popu-lation which was exhibited by the Armenians Ar-menians who no longer opened their shops neccessarily greatly accentuated the existing feeling In view of the critical situation a certain Father Mesrob at the time actIng act-Ing representative of the Armenian bishop of Trebizond and also the most prominent citizens of the city were summoned to the government house to a meeting but only the bishops representative and one merchant a certain Mahouihan answered the summons sum-mons and presented themselves They were Implored to exert all their Influence Influ-ence to prevent a repetition of such scenes and were also requested to state where the two accused men were in hiding the arrest of whom would aid in restoring tranquility In reply to these exhortations however the merchant declared that he had never Interfered in the affairs of the community commu-nity and the priest replied on his side that he did not know the accused and that judging from what he had heard it would appear that the two pashas Had been wounded by a soldier and that Rahmi Effendi had been killed by a ilussulman and he added that It would be well to arrest the real criminals crim-inals and allow the arrested Armenians their liberty Seen in the Act It was observed to them that both of the eases were of public notoriety and indeed the accused had been seen in the act The first Incident had occurred oc-curred in daylight and had been witnessed wit-nessed by a number of persons and that as for Hatchik Slepane ha had not yet been arrested and yet Inhabited Inhabit-ed the city Itself It was therefore most improper that they should simulate simu-late Ignorance and take the part of tha criminals and Father Mesrofb and the merchant were therefore again exhorted ex-horted to heed the course of the authorities au-thorities and to summon the more important im-portant citizens to meet at their house to discuss the situation and to reveal the hiding place of the fugitives anti it |
