Republican Party of Utah Whit Had Hanna With R The Appointees Career Special to The Herald Washington June 3 District Attorney Attor-ney Judd was displaced today for C O Whittemore The president sent the latters nomination to the senate at 3 oclock this afternoon This nomination was decided upon several months ago The delay was occasioned by the desperate des-perate efforts of Judd to hold the place through theentire McKinley adminis E 1pq PIL 1 C O WHITTEMORE Appointed United States Attorney For Utah tration a a reward for his apostacy I is said that the last appeal on behalf be-half of Judd was made direct to Boss Hanna but was futile WILL GRIEVE BOTH The above is calculated to make two people feel badly One is Mr Judd the other Mr Whittemore The former will regret that his little plans have been spoiled and the latter for the reason rea-son that he has been kept out of the salary he might have drawn had he been appointed when the selection was decided upon But the ousted and the appointed are the only ones who will feel disgruntled disgrun-tled with the exception of the members mem-bers of the Democratic party Because Be-cause the selection of Mr Whittemore will do more to unify the Republican party in this state than anything else which could have happened It will make Dennis Eichnor who labored for McKinley against the advice of all his close friends feel so good I will make Bishop who fought in the ranks so valiantly rejoice with exceeding great joy I will cause Pennel Cher ringtons heart to well up with glad ness for he may be appointed deputy Lindsay Rogers will read the name of Whittemore and his bright bonny blue eyes will fill with tears of joy as he contemplates the significance of the selection made by the president Morris Mor-ris Ritchie will raise his voice in glad acclaim because of the choice made I Ritchie will be glad because if he could not get I Whittemore could For Ritchie and Whittemore were the same kind of McKinley men One could not tell what his politics would be until after the Democratic national conven tion at Chicago and the other well ic was a candidate and ha to get votes I will unify the Republicans for I the reason that it demonstrates that almost any kind of a Republican can get an office And there will be hope spring up in many a heart when the news is read this morning The selection selec-tion says the administration does not care if a man is a little weak in the knees that the fellow afflicted with sil ver mania today may become a gold bug tomorrow and land after all How the news will be received by the members of the bar no one can tell for a few days Criminal lawyers geer ally exult The fellows who have nothing noth-ing but civil cases will not care to say anything Of course Whit will take hold of the office as soon a his papers get here and Judge Judd will retire to ruminate on how it pays to be a Democrat with giltedge trimmings MR WHITTEMORES CAREER Mr Whittemore is a young managed man-aged 35 He has been county attorney of this county and was the officer who started the boodle cases of which all the defendants were acquitted with the exception of Joseph L Morris whose case is yet pending In politics he is at this time a McKinley Republican Just after the nomination of McKinley he did not know where he was at stating stat-ing in an interview in the Tribune right after the convention at St Louis he would have to wait until the Chicago convention before he could tell what he would do a he was a friend of silver Before the division movement Whitte more was a Democrat Then he was a Liberal Then he identified himself with the Peoples party Then he became a Republican a silver Republican a friend ot the white metal Until his term of office expires he will be a gold
