Show EIGHTH GRADE COMMENCEMENT Exercises of The Scliools Held Nearly 100 Promotions Nearly a hundred pupils of Ogdens schools were yesterday advanced from the eighth grade to the high school Exercises appropriate to graduation were held in the Madison Central and Grant schools THE CENTRAL At the Central the largest room was totally inadequate to contain the throng of pupils and their friends The exercises exer-cises were opened by a chorus song In delivering the salutatory Victor Reno dwelt on the subject of Progress in a creditable manner Trellis Carter recited re-cited the Spinning Wheel Song and a duet by Misses Ruth and Bernice Bel nap followed The Vikings was the subject of a YIking 1 thoughtful essay by Merrills Wheeler r Pearl Pingree and Daisy Mcintosh sang La Jota very acceptably Our Country was the subject of a patri otic address by James Bosen He sketched the steady rise of our nation up to the present time and closed with 3 ringing peroration predicting the freedom of Cuba Mamie Pidcocks recital cital of The Bivouac of the Dead was very popular The Class Prophecy by Bessie Booth was most humorous The Highlands of Scotland was the subject of a clever historical essay by Alva Garff the work being based on Scotts Lady of the Lake A selection by the quartette composed of Libbie Rudd Emma Bulen Anna Muller and Ruth Belnap preceded a feeling valedictory by Stella Brainard James Freece welcomed wel-comed the pupils to the high school and Pearl Cook made a fitting response Mr Ellis of the board of education presented diplomas to the following Lillie Anderson Ella Bogart Bernice Belnap Bessie Booth Lena Blair Emma Em-ma Bulen Stella Brainard Pearl Cook Mollie Carson Trellis Carter Jose De Wolf Maggie Doyle Alva Garff Hattie i THE GRANT At the Grant school the teachers of the Eighth grade were Principal Doxey ruid W N Petterson the class motto i Perseverance Leads to Success the data colors pale pink and green and I the Iower pink roses and white carnations car-nations A programme of eleven numbers num-bers opened with the chorus Heroes of the Maine sung by Fifth grade students Hazel Sadd gave a recitation and a piano duet was given by Nellie Greemell and Wealthy Benap Ruben Ru-ben T Evans of the High school then gave the address of welcome and Joseph E Evans made the response After the Washburn Mandolin and Guitar Gui-tar club had rendered a selection Principal Prin-cipal Doxey after a brief speech presented pre-sented the diplomas The Fifth grade students gave another chorus sons and I then came the valedictory by Joseph G Scoville a thoughtful address showing show-ing that life is real and earnest and the grave is not its goal Gertrude Ritter delivered a farewell address Miss i Nannie Tout sang the closing song and responded to two encores en-cores but the audience wanted her again In the afternoon the pupils and teachers gathered for a social time Refreshments were served and some musical
