Show MERRITT MUST HURRY Authorities Decide to Expedite the Philippine Movement Washington June Assistant Secretary Sec-retary of War Meiklejohn has telegraphed tele-graphed General Merritt at San Francisco Fran-cisco to hasten the departure of the Philippine expedition I is the intention of the department to start this expedition as soon as possible pos-sible and so great is the anxiety to accomplish this result that orders have been issued to leave one transport behind be-hind i necessary to insure immediate sailing The effective measures takenby the administration will shortly render Manila Ma-nila harbor impregnable against imprgable Spanish Span-ish attack In connection with the defenses de-fenses of that harbor it is learned that the City of Pekin carried with her to the far east a number of mines containing con-taining fifty pounds of gun cotton of the same character a those which were sent to the North Atlantic squadron squad-ron at the request of Rear Admiral Sampson Back of these mines will be placed the monitor Monterey which will shortly start for the far east in tow of colliers and there Is good reason to believe that Rear Admiral Deweys force will be supplemented in the near future by the gunboat Bennington Flgiting in the smooth waters of Manila Ma-nila bay naval experts declare the Monterey will be able to give an excel lent account of herself I is expected she will leave San Francisco in a few days I |
