Deception Practiced Upon Them A Gun Play at Terrace The Couriers Gain Nearly an Hour in Utalu oni Schedule Time Log of the Progress of the Relay I I There was considerable chan and I annoyance freely expressed by th Salt I Lake wheelmen and a good many of the general public at the manner in I which Salt Lake w given the g by in the transcontinental bicycle Ire I I-re race The route a laid out b Ian I-an Rishel of the intermountain I division was west of the Great Salt lake across the desert from Terrace by I the old stage line through Tooele county coun-ty t Salt Lake thence to Echo not touching Ogden but heavy rains mode I I n the desert impassable and the route was changed so that the riders were to come to Ogden and thence t Salt Lake then on east via Echo canyon I According to agreement the Ogden j riders were to bring the packet I to Farmington where it was to be delivered to the Salt Lake I men but instead of abiding byte I by-te agreement the Ogden riders car I red it to Echo via Peterson and Croydon thus disappointing and breaking faith with the Salt lam i riders who were assembled at Farm ington t receive It and convey it to I Mullets bicycle emporium in Salt Lake where Mayor Glendmning in the absence of Governor Wells was to i I have signed It and sent it on its way 1 I BAD FAITH AND DECEPTION The act of bad faith and deception wa deliberately planned and the ungentlemanly un-gentlemanly trick was accounted a good joke by some Ogden people woe sensibilities are too gross to make fine distinctions Among these it would appear i ap-pear is acting Mayor Jones of the Junction City who is accredited with the authorship of the following dispatch I dis-patch t Mayor Gdendinning UT you want to g the relay package I pack-age you will have t put on your I skates and catch them somewhere between be-tween Ogden and Evanston They I sneaked through Ogden the Junction City and gave your poor old sleepy i I j village the g by I j I appears that the Ogden men got I I I possession of the package at Terrace after a gun play In which cowboys i took part and that the whole scheme was without the knowledge of Man i ager Ktsnei ana it is more tnan niteiy that somebody will get into serious I trouble for interfering with the I United States mails I HOW THE BULLETINS CAME AboUt 730 yesterday morning the bulletin a Mullets where preparations of tions were made for the reception the riders announced that the riders had left Ogden and were well on their way south and would undoubtedly get here about S46 Everything was ready to receive the riders except the officials who were t sign the packets and these would b notified as soon as the men changed at I Farmington At 830 everybody was on the qui vive for the first sight of the packet About this time the feeling feel-ing of expectation changed to one of surprise as the following was posted Have not reasched Ogden yet Trace lostExpect report in a few minutes After the surprise this report caused had subsided the interest began to wane In about fifteen minutes the following startling report was on the bulletin board boa Passed Willard at 502 a m Williard is only about fourteen miles north of Ogden and the assembled norf crowd were puzzled to know why Ogden Og-den had not been heard from The surprise and wonder changed to indignation when Ogden was heard from in these term through We All off Message went thugh ber canyon Salt Lake not in It At this an indignant crowd gathered in the store to talk the matter over One of the clerks got word from Manager Man-ager A C Schram of the Ogden riders Rishel the division that he and Bill divsiOn manager would start out after the riders rid-ers right away and get the packet At rght the last bulletin was posted It was aa follows I Message stolen by Ogden couriers Did not go through Ogden but sent I around Rishel leaves Ogden on train t overtake and get message bjr force if necessary Ogden at sea as well as I Salt Lake Seems as if the couriers I were responsible for this tnemselves After this the crowd dispersed wIng I w-ing vengeance on the couriers if they were caught After the last bulletin Mullets people began to take down the yellow bunting that draped the store and in half an hour everything was as quiet as usual I No one would suspect that anything unusual un-usual was going on except for the reserve re-serve with which the clerks greeted customers Everybody in the store was mad and refused to say a word about the race II ON THE ROAD In the evening telegrams locating the riders at the different stations were posted I suc-cessful consummation of the transcontinental transcon-tinental relay race I was Ogdens day to celebrate a victory achieved over the manipulator of Salt Lad L-ad they did it in fitting style No animosity whatever entered Into the matter The Ogden men simply believed believ-ed that they had scored one over Salt Lake o beat them at their own game The statement set forth by the Ogden Og-den wheelmen yesterday w to the effect that an attempt was made by the Salt Lake men to get possession of the coveted package at Lucien a place some miles west of Terrace Had they succeeded in this their intention was to ride south of Terrace without touching at that place on across the desert to Salt Lake thus cutting out Ogden The Ogden men were apprised of this intention and thwarted it although though not without some difficulty as it is stated that one of the Salt Lake men pulled a revolver and threatened the courier The Ogden man also drew courC Oge his six shooter to defend himself and a cowboy who was in the vicinity chipped in and began to shoot but fortunately for-tunately no one was injured When the package reached Terrace it wa entrusted t Fowler who made a splendid run to Grows ranch There Harris got possession o it and was off on the fly t Kelton About a mile west of that place he took a header and broke his wheel but finished the distance on foot Wade and Hart made splendid time from Kelton to Lake and Drabble pedaled up Promontory hill for all he was worth Proudfil covered his twelve miles to Blue Creek in mUe Crek fiftyfive minutes and Alstot arid Carey arrived w Corinne in good time Brough and the Rev Snow made a hot pace from there t Willard where they handed the package to Hulmston and hereby hangs a tale I Hulmston was supposed t carry it to Thirtieth street in Ogdeh but exactly ex-actly at 624 a m he was met on Washington avenue between Twelfth street and Five Points by some of the Ogden men and when they got him to stop they instructed him to carry it to the mouth of Ogden canyon and there he would be relieved He followed fol-lowed his instructions well THE MAYOR PRO TEM I At the mouth of the canyon he was met by De Wolfe and Smith and Mayor pro tern Jones and Willis Beardsley The former signed the document Beardsley attached the great seal of the city it was given Into the custody of the two riders and it was off on its long journey eastward Setting a sharp clip on the good road through the canyon and across Ogden valley they were soon on the top of the divide where they transferred trans-ferred it to Gray who carried it to Peterson Gray had a very unenviable ride The road down hill Is rough and rocky and before Gray reached his destination he had four times taken a somersault over the front of his wheel Walter Webb received the package at Peterson and made a great pace over the fifteen miles t Croyden From the latter place C Smith rode on the railroad road track to near Echo the end of the I Utah division He covered nine miles in fortyfour minutes but unfortunate < ly punctured his tire and Foulger his trailer covered the rest of the distance I delivering the package to the Ogden i delegation at Echo at 1104 From there i it was carried east by Hart and Ship ley o Salt Lake The management of affairs at Echo was left to A G Horn and he did his part well A large delegation went from Ogden to Echo yesterday to see that there was no interfer nce with the dfiSr atch of the package east When they returned to the city at 140 they receIved great ovation a large crowd meeting them at the depot and escorting escort-ing them up town Charles Schramm iI i iI I I I Relic of the Trip Across the Desert and his aides are entitled to all congratulations con-gratulations for their cute generalship general-ship in carrying out the welllaid plans to a successful issue RISHEL WAS ANGRY Manager Rishel was the maddest man In town yesterday when he discovered dis-covered how he had been duped and he was a long time in discovering it About 9 oclock a telegram was received re-ceived here stating that the package had passed Morgan and this was the first information Rishel got of the scheme Up to this time he had been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the package and when it dawned upon him that his plans had proved bortive evidently considered it was futile to wait longer for the letter that never came and he has not been seen since The Ogden men regret that Governor Wells and Mayor Glendinning did not have an opportunity to sign thai precious pre-cious document but these honorable gentlemen must remember that man proposes but a higher authority in Ogden disposes |
