Show AJVOTHER OP WHISKYS VICTIMS Henry Bell Commits Suicide with 1 Morphine Through those twin demons whdsky and morphine aided by sickness and despair Henry Bell a young fellow in the prime of life shook off this mcvaa coil yesterday and left a heartbroken wife far away amid the flowers and verdure of lovely San Jose The deed was commjtted with morphine mor-phine and from the young fellows appearance ap-pearance he has been a slave to the drug for some time It was not a case of overdose or anything of the kind but from a written statement left in his pocked and from every evidence it was committed intentionally and at the coroners inquest yesterday morning morn-ing a verdict was rendered accordingly accord-ingly The complete story is as follows as brought out ail the coroners inquest William Bennett said that he met Bell Monday morning between 9 and 10 oclock in the Arcade restaurant which is run by Bennett on Twenty fifth street Bell auto a couple of eggs and then asked for a quiet room Bennett Ben-nett had none but directed him to Mrs Loetius who rented him a room He told her that tie thought he wouldnt want the room for a couple of days but when she was showing it to someone some-one else he came back and asked for it and it was given him She said that he seemed perfectly right minded and there was nothing about him out of the ordinary Mrs Lashus said that yesterday morning Tuesday he came to the kItchen door and told her little girl to tell her mother to make up nis i ui because he wasnt going away Nothing Noth-ing was seen of him all day and so in the evening she went up to his room She could not hear him and so looked I through the keynote surprised to find the key gone He was not visible and I so with her own key she opened the door and seeing him lying quietly on the bed and supposing him asleep left the room She spoke of the matter to Iva Thompson the colored stableman and i he remembered that the poor fellow was tired Yesterday morning at 830 she went to the room again and saw him still lying on the bed and supposing sup-posing him to be dead she told the stoibleman to notify an officer Officer Sullivan was found who notified Chief Davenport and who in turn notified Coroner Joseph Hall They found the dead man laying on his sideor rather Inclining toward the right aide with his lett arm across his breast his right leg stretched out and his left leg drawn up When the coroner attempted to pull his leg out straight it r ° m > d a great deal of force and that is why he holds to the opinion tle i dead since the night before In the room on lie bureau was found a thir tyeight caliber revolver while in the top drawer was a 50grain morphine bottle containing a little In his pockets pock-ets were found a gold watch pink powder papers a bottle half full of ipecac and opium pills a memorandum book 2350 a comb knife caraidr keys whistle and handkerchief The most important was the memorandum I book in which was written in lead pencil pen-cil Harry Bell San Jose 393 Fifth street CaliK Knights of Pythias Vinamd lodge I Frisco Kate forgive me goodbye In case anything happens to me I have 2000 insurance in Union Mutual of Portland Me I Address Jno Graves Market and Santa Clara San Jose Cal Pistol belongs to J Graves the watch can send to my wife My father inlaw Edwin Bishop is at present working Collier the book in Salt Lake city You will find 2250 in pocket with which to defray small expenses Sickness and whisky has deranged my mind Yours H BELL Buy a shirt and collar and cuffs He evidently means the Collier Publishing Pub-lishing house in Salt Lake and yesterday yester-day word was sent to his fatherinlaw The body was removed to the Richey undertaking parlors where It was seei by The Herald reporter The young I fellow has a light complexion with light brown hair and bluish gray eyes the lids being half opened so that the glazed sightless eyes may be seen His features are very sharp and he has a slght Roman nose He is very slender slen-der and looks as if he were a total physical wreck before he died Both shins are badly skinned but aside from that there is not much on has slender I body His cheeks and in fact his gen 1 oral appearance would indicate the consumption con-sumption of a great deal of morphine but no incision of a needle marks hte body I At the inquest held by Coroner Joseph I Jos-eph Hall the following witnesses testified testi-fied to the above story Mrs E A La l shur T H Carr Iva Thompson colored I col-ored William Bennett and Chief of Police I Po-lice Davenport The jury returned a I verdict of suicide by morphine Coroner Hall communicated the matter mat-ter to the wife of the deceased but as yet has received no answer J P Ledwidge the chancellor commander com-mander of the Queen City lodge of Ogden Og-den telegraphed to Vineland lodge at I San Jose California asking if any such 1 I man belonged to that lodge and received re-ceived aa answer in the affirmative |
