Show I i TALKS TO TEACHERS lllKLiL VISITED BY TWO HUN I DIIED PEDAGOGUES Delves Into Ancient History and Discovers That His Great Grandfather Grand-father Was Once in the Business of Teaching the Young idea How to Shoot x CANTON 0 Aug M Major McKinley McKin-ley this afternoon received a delegation composed of 200 of the Teachers association asso-ciation of Stark and surrounding counties coun-ties which is in convention here They surrounded the house and united in sing ing America This brought the major out and after addresses by C L Ether and J H Sarver the latter of whom paid a beautiful tribute to the majors sister who was for thirty years a teacher here Major McKinley responded in part a follows Mr Hiner Ladies and Gentlemen cannot permit to pass unnoticed for 1 was deeply moved by Itthe beautiful tribute paid by Mr Carver to a member of my own family and one whom I dearly loved Her splendid work is to mea me-a sweet and perpetual memory and I gratefully acknowledge the inlluence she exerted upon my life Her noble example exam-ple has been to me a constant inspiration That the board of education of Canton should have so honored her memory is most gratifying to her family and friends I have great respect and increasing respect for the schoolmaster My great grandfather was a teacher of a private school New Lisbon Columbia shool in Lisbn Columbia county this state long before the public school system was established and since that time some member of the family has been engaged in that honorable occupation occupa-tion As J said I have always felt the greatest respect for the schoolmaster and now and then possibly a fear of him Laughter Still my earliest and pleas antest recollections are associated with him and I bear him only gratitude and love In early days a now he was the conspicuous figure in the community commanding the confidence and often winning the affection of both pupils and parents The teacher ordinarily was the ideal pupil In him was embodied ail that was good and true and great and this was always true when the pupil loved the teacher but i he did not love the teacher though it was rarely true if he would enjoy the friendship C hJs school he must not only have a good head but a good heart As I look back upon my school day I grow in the conviction that my best teachers were not the most agreeable teachers Laughter I have come to realize that what was less attractive at-tractive to me was most important to my education You have a deep interest in your country I you would show your love for your country you must give considerate attention to American policies While this call is without any political significance it is at least an assurance that your minds are not wholly absorbed with literary pursuIts but that now and then thcv are turned to considerations of a political character Tne duties of citizenship zenship are quite as high and important as any which can engage our attention and the educated man of the country should be the least to overlook and neglect neg-lect them lec The teacher is the public servant He Is not i private employment He is an essential part of the conservative force which upholds the national fabric He whch uphols future citizen and future statesman He is a mighty power In the life of the nation His influence has uniformly uni-formly te naton the side of right He molds and directs the minds which will control the destiny of the republic Gentlemen you are engaged in a noble no-ble Gentemen honor you in your service calng and profession Nothing more exalted could engage you The youth are yours to train The youth o the land are yours to instruct That i may be wisely wise-ly done you have my best wishes and prayers I shall be glad to meet and greet each and every one of you personally ally Applause |
