vim with which they make the blue flame from their new r rifles at a target practice I The crowd was the largest that has foregathered to Garfield since Blakie i Blakemore and his charmers took away themselves and the Mikado The post uniforms were almost as well represented rep-resented as the heroic blue of the national na-tional guard The sport was rare and sphere careering all over the field But the post men had tubs in their hands and the bal was never allowed to touch the foliage The team from the post mens chalked five up twelve runs to the guards OTHER SPORTS In the turning high jump Colton Schroeder and Foster competed Colton Col-ton won with I feet 1 inch to his credit This was the event In which the accident acci-dent to Foster occurred Schroeder defeated Covell in the running run-ning broad jump Schroeder 17 feet Covell 15 Professionals stole in on the 100yard foot race The racer who entered as Caldwell was none other than Tom Morris a sprinter of national reputa tion who won several races at the Worlds fair ICinseyl also was by no means one of the uninitiated and they took the race with ease from Douglass Morris got over the tape first in 1 flat two yards to the fore of Kinsey Colton won the standing high jump over Schroeder and Covell Distance 4 feet 7 inches The standing broad jump was captured cap-tured by Schroeder whose leap mea ured 9 feet 3 inches Covell got over 9 feet a mark which Colton was unable to reach TARGET COMPETITION The target competition brought out some unusually skillful marksmen Five companies A B D and H competed com-peted The prize was won by company B with the remarkable score of 95 out of a possible 125 The second prize fell t company A who made a record of 87 Company H was next with a score of 84 D had 78 to their credit while E came a few points lower Private Christensen and Sergeant Bevan tied on the highest score 20 out I of a possible 25 In the trial for first place Christensen defeated Bevan on a score of 19 to 18 I Ait sunset the companies marched out i j t the open where they went through I a successful drill under Captain Grow j I COMPETITIVE DRILL i The competitive drill between individual indi-vidual I all day the weather was as fair al the sweethearts of the glossbuttoned I militiamen mitiamen i ONE ACCIDENT One accident only occurred to marI mar-I the joviality of the day Frank Foster in contesting for high jump honors had his leg broken between the knee i i and ankle Foster made a remarkably i high jump but in the descent his lag I apparently got into a cramped post 1 tion and when he hit the ground the j bone snapped with a sound like britltle < i wood He w placed on a cot and I i brought to the city on the 6 oclock I I train Dr Wright who happened to I be present and attended the militiaman fracture militia-man said the injury was a simple BASEBALL The baseball game was a peculiar performance in which the post team did all they went out there to do In the fivemile race Tod Caine amused himself with his competitors and in I the target and drill performances company com-pany B took nearly all the prizes and all the glory glorTE ROAD RACE The road race which was the opening open-ing event began shortly before 3 oclock and was witnessed by passengers passen-gers on the 215 train Tad Caine started and so did E H Smith and L C Dale and the last two scorchers found it hard work to prevent themselves them-selves from getting lost Caine in the first mile put a good stretch of dust I and space between himself and Smith and finished in a canter fully onehalf I mile to the forward Smith came in second and a yawning gap of several I hundred yards separated him and Dale Caine was awarded a gold I medal REGULARS VICTORIOUS The base bal game was an extremely extreme-ly lively affair while i lasted The militiamen mi-litiamen struggled well in the first three rounds when the score was three t four in their favor but after that they were clay in the hands of the post sportsmen The batteries were Cummings and Conley for the fort and McFarlane and Matthews for the N G U Only five innings were played In the last the guardsmen found the Cures of the fort twirler ad sent the qi i ward Castle and Simmons acted as I judges and about twenty militiamen entered the competition They were put through a rigid drill under Captain Grow Most of the competitors were short lived and in a few minutes only three remained of the line Sergeant Rasmussen of company B Sergeant Johnson of company A and Corporal Hulbert of company D The latter two finally went down together and Sergeant Rasmussen amid the shouts of members cf his company was declared de-clared winner of the medaL deII |
