Show CANADA WINS I u ESTJIT MIGhT HAVE BEES DIF FEUEST BUT Contest Was a Moat Exciting One and the Foreigners Scooped in the Prizes on Time Allowance Only TOLEDO O Aug 25 After an exciting contest the Canada boat won her second t I race from the Vencedor today by the narrow margin e 2t > seconds corrected time and with h captured the beautiful Toledo challenge cup the International yachting championship of the lakes and 60 per cent of a S1500 purse offered by the citizens of Toledo The race was sailed in a fine twenty knot breeze which ranged from southwest to west and while the Vencedor actually I beat the Canada three minutes twelve seconds sec-onds over the course and proved herself a wonder in a wind she had to allow the royal Canadian yacht a handicap of three minutes and fiftyseven seconds In spite of the Canadas big allowance the Ventj cedor would have beaten her but for tha fact that her skipper made a number of unnecessary tacks on the way to the homo mark in the first round and finally overstood it losing nearly two minutes which ultimately caused the American yachts defeat The Canadians are elated over their victory but it is understood that prominent t promi-nent lake yachtsmen on this side will immediately im-mediately challenge for the cup and that another race is almost certain for next season Commodore Jarvis of the Canada said he expected the Vencedor would win by fifteen minutes today The official time at the finish was Vencedor 211 f > 4 Canada 2iU35 SUMMARY Boat Start Finish Elapsed Cortd Canada 1130 21133 24435 24038 Vencedor 1130 21104 24104 24101 A ball was then tendered the visiting i yachtmen their families and friends in the International Yacht association rooms of Toledo at Pythian Castle The event was a social success During the ball the challenge cup and a draft for 51500 representing the purse to be given to the racing crews were presented to Commo I dor Jarvis of the winning yacht by I President Locke of the association The l 500 silver troohy is a large bowlshaped cup goldlined and supported by an eagle 1 with spreading wings alongside a recumbent recumb-ent lion The inscription on the bowl is Presented by the International Yacht Race Association won by 1896 Commodore Jarvis was made happy by the receipt of a score of congratulating telegrams from Canada most of them coming from yacht clubs and friends |
