Show I I TILE REPUBLICANS LESSON ExPresident Harrison was interviewed I inter-viewed the other day He did not I have much to say but he said one I I very important thing After saying j that he thought when the Republican I party returned to power it would retain re-tain it for a long time he remarked I I The Republicans have had their lesson I les-son Just what he meant by the remark re-mark is hard to say He says they have had their lesson What is it It will seem to the ordinary observer of our politics that this lesson is contained con-tained in the tariff histor of that party From the days of the war until the passage of the McKinley bill there was a continual and steady increase of the tariff It almost seemed to be the I idea of the Republican party that this government existed solely for the purpose pur-pose of protection Everything was made to bend to that But at last the protection got so big and burdensome that the people could stand It no longer lon-ger Then they repudiated it That I I they did no one knows better than I Mr Harrison and until he shall vouchsafe vouch-safe an explanation of what he means by saying that the Republicans have had their lesson his remark will be construed by the people to mean that the Republicans carried the doctrine of protection beyond the limit of endurance endur-ance and that they must not return to the evil of their ways Yes the Republicans Re-publicans have had their lesson Will they learn the moral |
