Show TILLJIAN AND ST JOHN Animated Debate on the Question of Prohibition NEW YORK Aug 9A large crowd filled the auditorium at Prohibition park at Port Richmond tonight to listen to the debate on Prohibition by cxGovcrnor John P St Johu of Kansas who spoke for the system anil United States Senator B F Tillman of South Carolina who opposed op-posed it ExGovernor St John declared that the dispensary system was not in accord with the laws of the state and was an evil South Carolina hud laws he said prohibiting crimes the same as those ot other states and he had not understood why the state should permit the bale of liquor which was also a crime The speaker compared Kansas with South Carolina showing that Kansas had within the past ten years exceeded that state in wealth and claimed that this was largely due to prohibition Senator Tillman said Unit such a comparison com-parison was unjust Kansas had many more miles of territory than Souh Carolina Caro-lina and that by reason of her enormous en-ormous corn crops and other enterprises en-terprises she had a great advantage ad-vantage The state he said today was paying J2000000 annually toward the pension pen-sion of soldiers who assisted in the war against the confederacy He clalned however that South Carolina was prosperous pros-perous and the people happy and that within a few years she would be on an equal footing with Kansas He spoke at length on the benefits of the dispensary system He said there was no doubt that within the next few years the prohibitionists prohibition-ists would abandon their prohibitory law and come out in favor of the dispensary system The jury pave a vote by 11 to i m favor of Senator Tillman |
