Show MIINICIPAL ECONOMY The city council is engaged in the laudable work of finding ways and means of reducing the municipal expenditures ex-penditures but in some things that have been proposed probably It would be the better part of economy to go slow It is suggested that the pay of the police department be reduced ten percent per-cent and yet not long since the ordinance or-dinance which required all saloons to close at 12 oclock midnight was repealed re-pealed Now it is well known that this will not serve to lessen the vigilance required re-quired of the police but on the other hand will make it necessary for them to do more and run greater risks It is not the part of economy to cut down the pay of peace officers and at the same time increase their resnonsi bility V It is suggested that the saloon license be reduced but in view of the fact that they have been granted an all night privilege this proposition to reduce the license should not prevail Possibly the members of the council might tackle their own salaries with the pruning knife of economy and accomplish accom-plish the desired endwithout reducing the pay of the police or tire department depart-ment Members of the city council do not get too much pay now but they can better stand a cut In wages than the police The repeal of the merchants license some time ago was a mistake It possibly pos-sibly could have been reduced some but its absolute repeal was poor economy econ-omy A renewal of this license in a modified form will provide an easy means of overcoming any threatened deficiency in the revenue The electric light proposition is absolute ab-solute nonsense The idea that Ogden should not have any lights on the streets means that not only the lights would be put out but all signs or prospect pros-pect of prosperity would go with it It is injurious to the city that such a proposition should be made or entertained en-tertained by the council for a moment This light matter will of necessity be heard from later and deserves to be handled without gloves |
