Show THE CHARITY CONCERT A Musical Treat at the Tabernacle Last Evening A large gathering and if outward demonstration can be relied upon an I appreciative one attended the grand concert held at the Tabernacle last evening Under the joint auspices of I the Associated Charities and Young Ladies Aid society The entertainment entertain-ment was for the benefit of the poor of Salt Lake and they are indeed many Daily are we reminded by some pitiful incident of how much real destitution and misery there exists in our midst Every effort has been made and is being made by the several charitable associations and societies of the city to relieve as much as possible this distress but unless help can be obtained from the outside their sustained sus-tained exertions cannot prove of much avail Last night the extensive audience audi-ence indicated a generous desire on the publics part to hold out a succoring hand to those who stood in need of it The entertainment provided was a choice one with two or three selections tions of more than ordinary merit A beautiful rendition of the Pages Song from Les Huguenots was given by Miss Geneva Jennings She is gifted with a voice of great richness her upper notes being clear and thrush like whilst her lower are of infinite sweetness and leave nothing to be desired de-sired The Night Alarm was given with great effect by Helds military band This is a descriptive overture representing the alarm of fire at night ana it was realistic to a startling degree de-gree the sight of the frames uprising from the region of the choir and the hoarse shouts producing a mild fright amongst a portion of the audience Had this part of the recital been omitted the effect of the selection would have been quite as pleasurable i less exciting Linger Not Long an original composition by Evan Stephens has a strain of tender passionate pas-sionate melody running through i Mrs Anna Plummers rendering of It I was delicate and true her full round rich voice rising and falling with an exquisite sweetness Professor Daynes gave a very enjoyable organ recital and the Tabernacle choir was heard in 1 strength In a selection from the Messiah The Anvil Chorus by Helds military band closed the entertainment enter-tainment + |
