| Show tj With McKtnleyism relegated to the t bckground by common consent with S a new tariff la < s which no party wIll r scarcely have the temerity to radically i change with a depleted treasury and TVith hard times despite enlarged de mawl und inexhaustible resources the S l roe is going to Tib bimetallism and the Democratic south and a Demo wiatic west will unite to defeat the ti plethoric east Q fj o L I J 2J J w 0 P 1 > QUERIES AS TO STATEHOOD I I There are rumblings in the air which sound unfriendly to Utahs statehood They Indicate disturbances in the local political atmosphere They scarcely reach the dignity and force of thunder and are not likely to be illuminated with either sheet or forked lightning They do not come from Democratic elements Let it be distinctly understood under-stood that the Democratic party of Utah is and will be irrevocably committed i com-mitted to statehood for this territory at the earliest possible moment and its representatives in the constitutional convention will dilligently and faithfully I faith-fully work to that end The statehood movement is Democratic Demo-cratic in its origin and its legislation The enabling act was presented by a Democratic delegate and was the product pro-duct of Democratic intellect and purpose I pur-pose It was eminently a Democratic measure in and out of Congress was passed by a Democratic House and a Democratic Senate and was signed immediately im-mediately on Its passage by a Democratic Demo-cratic president We mention these indisputable facts because of Insinuations from Hepub lican sources that there are Democratic Democrat-ic officiate here who would not object to the postponement of statehood for personal and mercenary reasons There is no truth in these assertions and they merely reflect a wish lurking in the hearts of those who utter them If therefore it is desired to trace the twitterings which we have mentioned to thei source It will be found within the lines of the Republican camp and chiefly among moneyed men who fear the visits of the tax collector Rumor that there Is a possibility under un-der certain contingencies that the constitution con-stitution will be voted down by the people I peo-ple we regard as nothing but noise I We expect such a constitution as the great masses of Utahs citizens will heartily approve It must not be partisan par-tisan It must be republican in form and democratic in principle using those o JQ terms in their true meaning and not In a factional sense As to the proclamation of the President Presi-dent that will come without doubt if the quality last mentioned characterizes character-izes the instrument Notions about his rejecting It for this or that or the other probable reason may be classed II with the other rumbles there is nothing noth-ing substantial about them The sole qualification on which the President iso is-o pass is the republican nature of the constitution If it secures to Utah a republican form of government he has no choice but to issue the proclamation for the admission of the new state Instead of raising any doubts on this Important matter people who profess friendship for Utah should lend their efforts toward securing a firstclass organic or-ganic law which shall Include the best provisions to be found in other state constitutions and exclude obnoxious illiberal and unjust enactments Stop all queries as to Utahs statehood and unite to secure her full political freedom free-dom under an unexceptional and splendid splen-did charter of liberty |
