Show ORASGE GROWERS JOBILAST Frost in Florida Creates a Demand For Southern California FraU Los Angeles Cal Jan 25The recent killing frost to Florida has Ipft the Southern California orange grower jubilant jubi-lant not that he rejoices over the misfortune mIs-fortune of his brother orchardilst in Florida Flor-ida but because the freeze has created a demand for Southern California oranges unprecedented so early in the seam Usually there is not much demand far I Southern California oranges before the first of March by which time the Florida crop is cleaned up This year however the demand began two months earlier than usual Orders are pouring in much I I faster than they can be filled M the fruit I is slow In ripening The orchards are I carefully gone over and the ripe fruit culled and put aboard the cars as rapidly as the weather and other conditions will permit The recent heavy rains almost entirely suspended shipments as the ground was too soaked to allow teams to go into the orchards but the delay was all the better for the fruit as it gave more time to ripen Orange picking has been resumed all over Southern California Cali-fornia within the past few days and iiiany carloads of fruit will be remove bv the end of the week Reliable reports from all districts say the crop was never in better condition I none of the fruit being ripe enough to be injured by the late rain Not a particle of frost has yet occurred in the citrus belt and It is now regarded too late for danger from that source I The cooperative fruit exchanges claim to have control of fourfifths of the crop which is estimated at 6000 to 7100 carloads car-loads or about 2000000 boxes The exchanges ex-changes established prices early in Janu flIT which have not been changed to date The quotations furnished are 51GO to 225 per box for navels according to quality I and 3120 to 175 for seedlings delivered on the cars |
