Show ARTHUR EX ROUTE I Goes to Settle DiniculticH on the Southern Pacific I I Cincinnati Jan 23P I Arthur chief of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Locomo-tive Engineers was here today en route to San Francisco to settle difficulties difficul-ties on the Southern Pacific Referring Refer-ring to the street railway strike in Brooklyn he said I think it is illadvised Strikes are bad things as I said tout I think a strike particularly illadvised which throws so many men out of work when there are so many idle men in the country How can they hope to win when there are a dozen men to take he place of every man who goes out This is a bad time to strike r believe that the railroad companies were wrong when they refused to arbitrate with their men I recognize the perfect right of capital to an ade < ate return upon its investments and the railroad corporations have a right to 13 reasonable reason-able compensation for their enterprise and outlay tout on the other hand the employees have a right to reasonable compensation for their work I do not believe that capital has q right to make such an outlay thac I cannot meet its obligations except by the tale ns of it from their wageearners Judge Gaynor as I understand it has require the Brooklyn railroads to run their roads or show good and sufficient reason < why they cannot I think it wrong if the court should revoke their charters if the roads can show that they have been detained by forceful and unlawful means But I do blame the corporations for refusing to treat in the matter That should have been done in the first place |
