Show t GETTING GUNS READY 3ccU1S Figuring on Landing at Guatemala Sallna Cruz State of Oaxaca Jan 25 I is reported nero that arrangements r being quietly made b the Mexican I war authorities fo the Guatemalan invasion a soon a hostilities are declared de-clared The theory is that the armed corvette Zaragosa the gunboat Oaxaca and all Ahe Mexican boats on the Pacific Pa-cific coast will be employed in landing troops at San Jose Guatemala o at tom other convenient pont Inrmedl ately on landing the forces they wii 5e pusnefl with nU possible speed across the country towards the capital which Hies only about fifty miles from Che coast and where 1 5s naturally expected ex-pected tho hard fighting will occur At the same time the famed Mexican rural forces will b ready tO start from the various points on the border fhe vaous pnts borer now occupied by Mexican troops and cay occupe m airy sweeping1 itlmxugh the country like g atfhirlwind The rurals will amt am-t clear nip things as they 1 so and be on hand and1 reaSy to cooperate with I the seai forces toy the time they have t arrived before the city of Guatemala aIve ctj The artillery and other heavy guns will be shipped by sea and a the Guatemalans will do all In their power to prevent a landing of the Mexican forces it is evident that the artillery mounted on the Mexican snips and that designed for seige service will be immediately brought into play In this event as there are several good landing land-ing places along the Guatemala coast there will be no difficulty in eluding the opposition should it be shown at the harbor The Guatemalan forces are altogether too small to put up a good fight at more than one or two points and so Mexico will have probably little trouble in gaining land The evident policy of Guatemala will be to concentrate all the forces possible on the coast and northern frontier at the strategic points and have the forces fall back upon the fortifications at the Guatemalan capital capI-tal if unable to hold their own against the Mexicans That this will be possible is not easily < seen in View of the adroit plan which Mexico is evidently laying to rush in and capture their chief city on the very start Should the Guatemalans destroy the means of subsistence on the track of he invading Mexicans the rurals will be used for foraging purposes as well as for general fighting when needed |
