Show EFFECTS OF 11EPDBLICAX POLICY It is refreshing to receive a frank admission ad-mission made however unwittingly from a Republican paper that the policy pol-icy of the Republican party has been inimical to the material interests of the I majority of th people of this country The usual msthod is to charge all that to the Democratic party Everything that renders it difficult for the workingman working-man to raise a dollar wherewith to purchase that for which at one time he would have had to pay two dollars is incontinently alleged to be the effects of Democracy and more thhn that the very thing which the Democrats desire Of course that is bald deception but it is Republican assertion which takes the place of argument But here Is the Tribune talking In this way about Tom Reed and the Republican party and their policy Mr Reed and his friends for years have been adhering to a policy which has had the effect to take from the people peo-ple more and more of their capacity to buy So the revision of the tariff will not do the business Precisely We will not dispute that fact for a moment But the puzzle would be how that is to be reconciled with the assertions of the same paper that under the policy of that party unexampled un-exampled prosperity and increased wealth had come to the people panic ularly the working classe Also that it i was the Democratic party by a change of policy that would take from them the capacity to buy So that while goods might be cheaper for the consumer con-sumer the means to purchase them would be reduced and therefore it would be no advantage to have a two dollar article sold for a dollar if the working man hod not the dollar with which to buy That has been repeated ad libitum ad nauseam by the paper which now admits that it is the Republican Re-publican policy and has been for years to take from the people more and more the capacity to buy There is another thing worthy of notice no-tice When the Republican President Harrison made his boast of unprecedented unprece-dented prosperity which was echoed by our Republican contemporary and which reverberated for months in its columns The Herald showed that though in the aggregate wealth had increased in-creased in the country it was really certain olasses which had accumulated I that wealth while the agricultural and I laboring millions had become impoverished impover-ished And now here comes the Tribune with another acknowledgement not intended in-tended any more than the other to betaken be-taken in that flight but still just as applicable for all that and in this language lan-guage The property of this nation while it has increased in > the aggregate has not increased among the great army of producers True enough And it is all the more striking coming as it does from a Republican Re-publican source which further admits thatThe The people are unable to buy the goods through which thcr nation obtains ob-tains such revenue as comes through the tariff Of course we are aware that our Republican Re-publican neighbor does not care for such a little thing in dts eyes as consistency con-sistency But its thinking readers will no doubt marvel at these admissions in the face of its former avowals and wonder if some Democrat has not been I getting in work or ddeas that have been grafted upon the editorial columns of the Republican protectionist advocate advo-cate Republican policy taking from the people for years more and more the capacity to buy aggregating wealth for some classes and impoverishing impover-ishing the great body of producers Wll well we certainly are living under changed conditions a |
