| Show NEW YORKS AFFAIRS THEY ARE DISCUSSED BY PLATT AXD SEVERAL OTHERS Propositions for si Law Giving Power of Removal For the State So Democrats Can He Ousted Lad Republicans Re-publicans Annotated New York Feb 17A conference was held in exSenator Platts room at the Fifth Avenue hotel today attended by that gentleman Senator liexow Chairman Chair-man Edward Lauterbach of the Republican Repub-lican county committee and others of Mr I Platts friends The object of the conference I con-ference was to map out a plan of campaign I cam-paign respecting the city legislation particularly par-ticularly those bills now pending which are desired by Mayor Strong and the committee com-mittee o f seventy Mr Platt assured those who spoke to him on the subject at the close of the conference that no definite action had been taken That there was a strong difference dif-ference of opinion expressed at the conference con-ference was generally understood The disturbing element was said to be Edward Lauterbach The proposition he offered i was understood were retaliatory retalia-tory measures in the shape of a power of removal bill for the state which would enable Governor Morton to appoint Republicans Re-publicans to offices now held by Democrats Demo-crats This was said to be the method proposed to set off Mayor Strongs ap pnlntment of Win Brookfleld to be commissioner com-missioner of public works in this city Mr Lauterbach however declined to be quoted beyond the fact that nothing in the way of retaliatory legislation had been agreed upon J = |
