| Show KILLED BY HER LOVER lORR1 E cimno OF JAMES P GENTRY YESTERDAY In n Fit of Jcalonsy lie FireA Three I Sliott sit Sludge Yorke Who Dies I Almost liistuiitlj Philadelphia Pa Feb 17 Madge TTorke a soprano singer with The Baggage Check company was shot and almost instantly killed tonight at Zeiss hotel this city by James P Gentry a comedian of Colliers Back Number company Gentry escaped and up to a late hour had not been captured The Baggage Check company which opens at the Empire theatre tomorrow to-morrow night arrived here early this morning from Chester Pa an a number num-ber of the members including Madge Yorke registered at the Zeiss hotel Miss Yorke taking 3 thirdstory backroom back-room It was said that Miss Yorke whose home is in NewYork City took a 930 train for that city but she returned re-turned to the hotel about 6 oclock this evening and remained thereAbout there-About 9 oclock Gentry walked into tne hotel office and asked to be shown to Miss Yorkes room Being unknown to the hotel attaches he was told to vait a few minutes A message was then sent to the girls room but Gentry did not wait He walked into the hal way and ascended by means of the stairway Miss Yorke and MissfTilda Clark a member of the company were in the ompanY formers room practicing songs when Gentry opened the dooriand walked in unannounced Miss Yok > i manifested some surprise at seeing him and introduced in-troduced Miss Clark After hastily acknowledging the introduction Mi s I Clark says Gentry turned to Miss Yorke and in angry tones demanded Why did you not meet me today Fired Three Shot Before the girl could answer he whipped out a revolver from his pocket ant fired three shots at her each bullet bul-let talking effect one over the right eye one in the center of the forehead and the third close tn the left toTvm Gentry immediately tl rushed from the room and nothing more was seen of him The supposition is that he ran along the hallway and descended by means of tne fire escape at the back of the house making good his escape by one of the numerous alleys in the rear The shots were heard throughout r buidinE A patrol wagon was summoned sum-moned and the girl was taken to the Pennsylvania hospital about a block distant where she died immediately upon her arrival Charles F Blayney author of the Baggage Check and Manager Cooper Coop-er said that it was generally understood under-stood that Gentry and the girl were engaged en-gaged to be married and no motive for tne deed other than a fit of jealousy can be imagined Gentry has always been regarded by his friends in the profession as a thoroughly good fellow fel-low while not a word could be said against the ghl Gentry it is said is originally from Richmond Va originaly His friends in this city are of the opinion that he will commit suicide The aiiirclerort Girl The murdered girl was well known I in the profession During the season of 187788 she was a member of the New York Casino Opera company Of late years she has been with Natural I Gas Hoss and Hoss where she first met Gentry and a number of other prominent companies She wy I engaged by the Baggage Check company I com-pany last season and has mad nitli a hit that Mr Blayney had tried to advance I ad-vance her position and to this end W F writing for her the part of an unto dategirl in The Chattel Morreie which is to be produced in Xew Vork next month She was a remarkablv pretty girl decidedly brunette and about 22 years of age Gdntry is described a a ian Ihin sallowfaced man of about 35 years of age and is said to be a clever character char-acter comedian Miss Clark was prostrated y the occurrence oc-currence and could not be een case Detectives were at once put upon the |
