Show CM LLOYD I Is Highly Please < r With the Result of the Primaries i Chairman Lloyd of the Democratic c01mty committee is hlhl5 gratified f L T by the showing made at the primaries Tuesday night and by the bright prospects pros-pects ty convention for a great big enthusiastic coun I wIll be the largest political convention con-vention ever held In Salt Lake county he remarked yesterday hand the returns re-turns from the primaries show that it will iSo com osed of a better class of citizens than any convention that has ever been held here I fee confident that a strong ticket will be nominated and that 1t will be elected is a certainty I conceded by the opposition The party opens the campaign under much brighter prospects than two years ago he continued and I earnestly hope that i wIll roft by some of the lessons of thc campaIgn of 1896 One of these lessons is that a campaign cannot can-not be conducted without funds Only those who weremembers of our executive execu-tive committee have any idea of the deserate straits to which we were driven during that campaign We made the fight at a total expense of 1600 and elected the whole ticket while no county campaign had ever before been conducted for less than 2500 The Republican Re-publican commIttee expended over 4 000 and iaid all of its bills within 30 days while some of our obligations are yet unpaid This is a condition that reflects UDon the party and should be guarded against I am not in favor of a boodle fund or a boodle campaign but ever intel ent voter knows that a campaign cannot be conducted without with-out 2 reasonable fund for necessary eXenses I hoe the convention will see to i that the committee will not be et stranded in the mIdst of thIs campaign 1 think it should authorize the committee t9 levy a reasonable assessment as-sessment on all thc candIdates say 5 per cent of their first years salary and direct the committee to remove from the ticket any candidate who refuses to pay his or her just proportion of the expense of electing the ticket Such acton is proper and necessary a there are alwa7s some candidates who depend de-pend upon the others to pull the ticket throuh and foot all the bills Unless the convention provides for a campaign fund the committee will be helpless |
