the militia mi-litia which has been drilling and marching for a week Never before since the boys have been in camp have they showed so well Of course they have improved each day but their work Zn I r I yesferday in the parade and review was far ahead of anything they had done before lefore Why they are drilling like veterans veter-ans said Lieutenant Andy Burt who service with Torreys rough riders and who knows something about mili tarv tactics The boys walked erect and straight they held themselves together and they moved as if they took great inter cat in the tactics When the review was over Governor Wells was pleased Hm surprised said he They make a splendid showing I had hardly expected ex-pected t see the regiment show up in such form when so many of the men are neW to the service There was some enthusiasm over the governors presence When he and his staff walked across the grounds from the car fifty or more soldiers pn the parade ground cheered Whats the matter with Wells And there was a big round chorus answering an-swering that he was all right whereat the governor blushed The following members of the staff were with Governor Wells Adjutant General Burton Quartermaster General Clayton Surgeon General Pinkerton Judge Advocate General Smith Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Colonel Bruback and Lieutenant Colonel Nebeker There were in addition addi-tion in the governors party Mrs Will Clawson Mrs Burton Captain and Mrs Frank Wl Jennings Miss Marjorie Young Miss Taylor Mr and Mrs W B Main of Chicago Major R W Young and Jerrold R Letcher At the review the governor and his staff walked out on the parade ground and faced the troops while General Cannon with his staff in front gave several orders in the manual of arm Break Camp Today There was quite a large crowd of gentlemen gen-tlemen and ladies in the camp yesterday yester-day afternoon I was the last day for a dress parade and they had come to see the boys go through their maneuvers maneuv-ers for the last time For by this evening even-ing Camp Wasatch will have passed into history it will be one of the has beens General Cannon gave orders yesterday for camp to break at 1 oclock this afternoon The regular company drills will be held in the morning but the boys will march downtown down-town during the afternoon Dishonorably Discharged But one man less will march down with the boys today Ellis Johnson who Has been tried on the charge of sleeping on his post while doing guard duty was dishonorably discharged and marched out of the camn The court sat yesterday morning hearing evidence in the case and came to the conclusion that Johnson was guilty A report of the findings was made to Adjutant General Burton who approved the findings Johnson was marched out of camp between two sentries sen-tries yc terday afternoon In his defense he had this to say to The Herald I was not supposed to go on duty until Thursday night According to the alphabetical arrangement guard duty was assigned me to begin Tuesday morning but the sergeant came to me 01 that day and asked if i would be convenient to let another man whose I work fell on Thursday change guards with me Ireadily consented On Wednesday I was granted a pass and came to the city where I was engaged en-gaged In work throughout the day returning re-turning at 615 in time for dress parade The sergeant Informed me that owing to the scarcity of men available I would have to do guard duty that night Iremonstrated but to no purpose pur-pose So worn out with a days hard labor 1 took my post t This circumstance alone should have appealed i to the court Furthermore I am firmly convinced that the officers seized eagerly the opportunity presented pre-sented of making my sentence as severe se-vere possible in order to set an example ex-ample before the guard v Much of the evidence for the prosecution prose-cution was conflicting In statingmy belief that a fair verdict founded on the evidence I alone would have greatly i c < < mitigated my sentence L can feel that the majority of sentiment among the guardsmen also favors my belief For thig I am very grateful fr x J f Pvaid Off Today i j One of the most interesting ceremonies I ceremo-nies of the proceedings today that i51 interesting to the boys will be their payment for duty this morning Each enlisted man vrlll receive 9L50 per day lieutenants will receive 15 the regimental officers will receive 18 and the general officers will receive 24 The state doesnt pay high salaries but it gives more to the privates than doesUncle Sam There will be one advantage in braking brak-ing camp today the sick men will have a chance to go home for treatment The sickness has been growing at a rapid rate No less than twentysix men were reported orf the sick list yesterday yester-day They had dysentery sore feet sore lips headaches and such minor ills Private P Amundson of company com-pany B let his gun fall upon his foot during parade one day and as a result Major Beer the surgeon found it necessary to perform an operation to allay inflammation Some of these men are suspected of haying become sick to evade duty at any rate sickness has been spreading Mascot of the
