University of Utah 01 the site granted by congress on the western edge of the For Douglas reservatIon the University regents have commenced earnest consideration of the necessary preliminaries No time will be wasted on the important preliminary work and i all goes well contracts for the erection erec-tion of the unvesity buildings will have beenlet by July 1 or before Con stmuction work wi be rushed in the hope of having the universitys new home ready for occupancy on Jajj 1 Ul00Lt a meeting of the Universiy regents re-gents held yesterday afternoon at the Deseret National bank several important import-ant actions were determined in a manner man-ner indicating an enthusiastic interest In the early future of the states higher institution of learning However it insttuton was lad down as an irrevocable con diton precedent to the expenditure of any sum whatever of the states money on the new site that the city of Sal Lake shall first guarantee a sufficient permanent water supplY without cost for the university buildings and grounds But on this score there is little apprehension since a short connection con-nection wIth either the Emigration or Parleys pipe lines would suffice except when strong pressure is needed and for this purpose a hal mile extension or the City Creek hIgh line south from Popperton would give the desired re suIts The limit of the cost of erecting and completing the buildings required for immediate necessities was fixed at 180000 the remaining 20000 to be utilized for Installation of water and I sewerage system furnishings apparatus appara-tus improvement of the grounds and to defray the expense of transferring the universiys movable possessions from the present home By the adop ton of a resolution Secretary D R Allen was authorize t make requisition I requisi-tion upon the state auditor for his warrant on the treasury for the sum of 50000 the first onefourth of the university building fund to be made available by the board of regent I was decided at the meeting to employ em-ploy Richard K A Klettng the well and favorably known architect to draw plans and specIfi tons for the building and to supervise the construction work His compensation will be 4 per cent of the cost of the 180000 worth of buildings build-ings to be erected his duties to in elude the presentation of a general scheme for all the buildings that will eventually adorn the site and for the parking and suitable improvement of the grounds President J T Kings bur and Secretary Allen were authorized author-ized to sign a contract with Architect Kletting with a vieW mining the bestam modern university univer-sity structures as a basis of drafting for the class of plans amxl specifications fOi clas a buildings mos desirable according to the means available for the Utah edu rational institution The committee selected se-lected to go east on the inspection tour will receive no compensation whatever receve for their time but their actual and necessary expenses will be provided for n Is esmated that the cost of their trip will be within the limit of 1000 At first the building committee had a notion to solicit competitive prize I plans from architects but on mature deliberation it was concluded that more satisfactory results at lesS cost would be derived by following the procedure recommended by the committee and ratified as the line of policy leading up to theadopton of the best plans and I specifications upon which the university buIldings will be erected Some other maters of minor detail I lag were agreed upon at the regents meet I Viial Pinne superintendent of buildings of the Salt Lake City schools waS engaged to advise with Arciect Klettng in the preparation of plans and specifications and in the letting of contracts ProeLor Lyman and his class in engineering en-gineering wee reported to have nearly completed the surveying and plating O the sixtyacre tract on the east bench preparatory to the erection of an enclosing en-closing fence and the setting out of shade tree President Kingsbur vas authorized I to expend not more than 100 for assistance as-sistance to him in time university fa uly the balance of the present school year on account of his attention to affairs af-fairs relating t the pretminaries for the new buildings The president was also authorize to have a telephone placed in the university office Another meeting Of the regents will be held in a few days to forward the building movement |
