Show L SAMPSON WANTS AN ALLIANCE United States and England Should I Sta4id Together London March 22The Times publishes pub-lishes this morning a letter from a correspondent In Bermuda who describes de-scribes Rear Admiral Sampsons visit there last month and gives an authorized au-thorized interview with the admiral According to the correspondent Admiral Ad-miral Sampson remarking upon the marvelous change in American opinion opin-ion said Formerly England was regarded as the only European power with which I I the United States was likely to have serious differences Now we regard II I England as our best perhaps our only friend I cannot say whether this feeling feel-ing will prove permanent byt I hope it may Possibly we could not hope for more than Englands moral support in I the first instance in any conflict with a continental power but in times of real difficulty it would rIpen sooner or later into a defensive alliance I say frankly that in my opinion the United States has more to gain from such an alliance than England has Therefore I rejoice unfeigIt dIY at the change of sentiment in the United States I am not less gratified that no such change is needed in f3reat Britain and if any words of mine can I cement a friendship calculated to benefit bene-fit the whole world it is a pleasure to I myself and a duty to my country to utter them |
