Show SCHAfFNER DEPOSED 4 Surprise For the Bandmaster of the Twentyfourth 4 A 1lANIEST INJUSTICE t m vmw OF A TEE RCN DBVLONS t His Rtement Due t the Christensen Christen-sen Abortion Case For Which Luke Was Arrested and Dis crgeTe Ofcer Have Noth lag Ant th Bandmaster 4 Los Angeles Cat March 21C H Schaner leMer of the Twentyfourth infantry band who is temporarily sojourning so-journing in this city was disagreeably surprised this morning by receiving n tce that he was discharged from the United tate service and ordering him to remain here until his discharge papers could be furnished him The band of which Schaffner was the leader was stationed with the regiment regi-ment at Fort Douglas near Salt Lake CIty where Schaffner lived with his wife and three children The regiment has only recently returned from Cuba where it took part in the campaign The band which Is composed of color col-or musicians is now at the Presidio and Schaffner was 01 his way to joIn them Hack of Schafners discharge there is a story which according to his statement does him a great injustice On the 16th day of February he left Sal Lake with his ife and three children for San Francisco During the same month a woman xiamed lame Emma Christenson died and as there were some suspicious circumstances about it the body was exhumed when it was found that death had resulted from the effects of a criminal operation opera-tion According to the Sal Lake papers as a result of the investigation warrants war-rants were issued for the arrest of I James A Luke Mrs J M Baker and C H Schafmner charging them with Schaner chargng being responsible for the womas I I death The other two parties have ben arrested but what steps will betaken be-taken in regard to Schaffner are not I known beyond his discharge from the army Schaner says he will mae no fight against extradition proceedings if they are instituted Nothing Against Schaner In answer to a telegram from San Francisco inquiring if the Salt Lake authorities desired the arrest of Charles H Schafner bandmaster of the Twen I t fourth regiment on the charge of complicity in securing an abortion on the late Mrs Emma Baker Christensen I Christen-sen Chief Pratt yesterday wired instructions in-structions not to make the arrest This followed from the fact that the pares I arrested on the charge and against whom there was some evidence were I discharged at the preliminary hearing I while there was practically nothIng against Schafner even though he was not present to defend himself or represented I rep-resented at the hearing |
