Show Rowland Hal Bishop Abiel Leonard gave a baccalaureate bac-calaureate sermon t the pupils of Rowland hal at St Marks church last i evening The subject of the sermon was I The Danger and Responsibility of Culture I He chose for his text the twenty fifth chapter 24th and 25th verses of Then he which had St Matthew received re-ceived the one talent came and said 11 was afraid and went and hid thy talent in the earth j The bishop said that the talents alluded al-luded to in the text had other mean which relate to spir ings than those spiritual itual good They might signify wealth 1 learning or ability of any kind bestowed be-stowed upon men for the highest good j I The people represented by the man to I whom was committed one talent were to b commended for the wise use of fo what they had Faithfulness to trust was that which the world needed and was most to be commended The young ladies graduating from Rowland Row-land hall had been taught that the true end of education was not so much to prepare people to gain substance but to develop all their powers and enable them to reach the highest ideals They were exhorted to remember that a they separated to their homes they were an duty bound to employ all their gifts in honoring God and benefiting others That cultivated and refined people owed a duty to God the church and the state and that a just sense of this responsibility would lead them to exert themselves for the highest and best ends The bishop reminded them of his own personal interest in each one and hoped that their highest anticipations an-ticipations in life would be realized There will be a musicale given by the pupils in the Congregational church on Tuesday evening Miss Flanders ha given the most patient and faithful instructions and her pupils pu-pils show that her efforts have been well expended On Wednesday evening at the same place the graduating class will read their essays and Mrs Hamiltons vocal her vo-cal training pupils will give an exhibition of |
