Show SILVER AT ST LOUIS J i J The San Francisco Chronicle says1 that two of the most notable signs in i the political heavens today are that McKinley will receive the Republican nomination for president on a pro j flounced protective platform with j something more than a kind word for silver and that the Democratic panty unable fco successfully defend its tariff legislation will split on the silver reef j toward which it is drifting Its tariff policy will not worry the Democratic party and when it comes to defending it it can be pointed out that some thirty millions of dollars were lost to the treasury by the change of front within a month of a member of the United States supreme court Nor is there danger of the Democratic party splitting on the silver reefV What will the St Louis convention do for silver What will this something some-thing more than a kind word for silver sil-ver ambunt to Anything The Chronicle makes protection the prominent promi-nent issue when everybody knows that the financial question is the paramount issue It has been our belief right along that the Republican convention would declare for gold and this has been the general belief The silver sentiment in the Democratic party has become so very pronounced that there no longer seems to be any question whether the I Chicago convention will declare for I free silver Furthermore the silver sentiment I sen-timent is spreading so rapidly over the whole country that it is not improbable improb-able the Republican convention may deem it absolutelY essential for policys sake to throw a sop to the silver men in the party It will be no more than a SOD some line phrases about the parity of the two money metals perhaps per-haps a declaration in ilcKinleys own words that the Republican party would as soon think of hauling down the flag as debasing the national currency I cur-rency There may possibly be a declaration dec-laration to the effect that there should be free coinage of silver when in its great wisdom the Republican party shall deem the time for it to have arrived ar-rived No man can predict what a national convention will do until it has done it and adjourned But there is not the slightest doubt in the world that the St Louis convention will not declare outandout for free silver It may possibly attempt to wheedle the silver members of the party into the belief that It is the partys intention to do something for silver and all the while be stabbing it in the back The silver Republicans of Utah j I should be on the lookout for this very thing and not allow themselves to be deceived by it if attempted They should not forget that one of their senators sen-ators has put the tariff issue before the silver question The people of the whole state should bear these things in mind To them the silver question is I paramount to all others and they should show the party that attempts a double dealing with it they want and will have no straddling To the party that straddles on the silver question ques-tion Utah is lost |
