Show The Competitor Case NEW YORK June 7A special to the World from Madrid says The minister of marine Beranger received re-ceived by the last mail from Cuba and immediately sent to the supreme court of appeals the papers and the extensive exten-sive report from the admiral commanding com-manding the West Indian station on the case of the filibustering vessel Competitor Com-petitor The supreme court will appoint a judge to examine the case and draw up a report before the full court pronounce pro-nounce upon the merits of the sentence sen-tence of the Havana court martial A decision cannot be expected earlier ealer than a fortnight though the government govern-ment has allowed the court to know t desire for prompt interpretation of the text of the treaties especially that of 1887 It is clear that most Spanish juris consuls and military men believe the court of appeals will simply quash the Havana sentence and declare the whole proceedings unwarranted and contrary Ito I-to the treaties The court will then order that the case be tried afresh in Havana by ordinary jurisdiction with 1 all the guarantees of fair play stipulated t stipu-lated in the treaty of 1877 I is again said in official circles In Madrid that the American state department has signified that It would not object to I suoh a Decision as an ordinary jurisdiction I juris-diction in such conditions might nounce cndtion pro I |
